ONE Championship’s Big Bang card in Singapore on Friday was its second live event of the pandemic era. But while it marked the return of fans to the arena (a handful, really), and to live broadcasting, it was not the card the promotion had hoped to put on.
Gone was the main event, originally a light heavyweight kickboxing title fight featuring Roman Kryklia and Murat Aygun. With one of the fighters coming into contact with someone suffering from COVID-19, that fight was off the card. Gone as well was a promising heavyweight bout between Amir Aliakbari and Islam Abasov. Which left the promotion scrambling to bring in reinforcements.
Those came in the form of Bi Nguyen, who wound up losing a unanimous decision to Jihin Radzuan, and Andy Souwer, who defeated Zhang Chunyu in a kickboxing bout. A kickboxing showdown betweem Marat Grigorian and Ivan Kondratev, meanwhile, was promoted to the evening’s main event.
