Brazilian Anderson dos Santos was looking to snap a two fight skid, and pick up his first win inside the octagon, at UFC Vegas 15 on Saturday. His opponent, Martin Day, was in the exact same boat: 0-2 in in the promotion, and badly in need of a win.
The bantamweight bout served as the featured preliminary fight at UFC Vegas 15.
Day looked to open with kicks, and Dos Santos fired back. The pair exchanged leg kicks before Dos Santos moved forward with a pair of big right hands. From there Dos Santos pushed the pace and looked for the take down. Dos Santos took Day’s back and tried to power him to the mat but Day defended well. Dos Santos secured the take down and worked from inside the guard of Day. Dos Santos worked to side control but Day was able to get him back into his guard; he ate an elbow for the trouble. Day then exploded up and escaped, only to grab Dos Santos and slam him into the mat — but in doing so he put his head under Dos Santos’s armpit and Dos Santos locked in the choke and got the tap.

“Respect jiu-jitsu,” dos Santos said during his post-fight interview. And it was his BJJ expertise that made all the difference on Saturday.
Official Result: Anderson dos Santos def. Martin Day by submission (guillotine choke), Round 1, 4:35
