A heavyweight battle between Alistair Overeem (47-18, 1NC) and Alexander Volkov (32-8) is set for a UFC Fight Night event on February 6, 2021. First reported by Brett Okamoto at ESPN, Overeem and Volkov will be the card’s main event.
Both competitors share a high ranking in the heavyweight division. Recently, “The Demolition Man” has had exciting performances, especially when coming from behind to secure the win. With Overeem at the number five spot and Volkov at four respectively, the pairing should make for a match-up that is both exciting, and extremely relevant to the division.
While Overeem has had his shot at UFC gold already, Volkov looks to advance the rankings and and keep his title aspirations alive. No matter what, fans can expect some technical striking from both sides. However, if Overeem implements a similar plan that he’s employed lately it could be a rough night for the Russian. Despite his incredible striking, the Netherlands athlete has rounded out his takedown game, mainly due to the help from former foe, Curtis Blaydes.
As mentioned in recent interviews, Overeem has acknowledged that he is in the twilight of his career. Conversely, fighting out of Russia, Volkov is a towering striker still in his prime, most recently stopping Walt Harris in the second round via kicks to the solar plexus. Overeem is 4-1 in his last five and is looking to make one last run at the title. A definite crossroads fight for both athletes.
Only two other fights have been announced for the UFC’s February 6 card to date, both at women’s flyweight: Former 125lb champ Nicco Montaño will fight Karol Rosa, while Molly McCann is expected to face Lara Procopi. While no location for the event has been reported at this time, it would not be surprising to see the octagon back on Fight Island around that time.
