When Calen Born saw the sheer number of short notice call-ups to the UFC going to fighters based in and around Las Vegas, the Kansas City-based Born made his move. He took up residency in Vegas, training at Xtreme Couture, hoping it inspired that same call for himself. While it wasn’t a short wait, it does appear that the wait is over.
According to the updated bout order on UFC.com, Born has gotten that call. Filling in for Jared Gooden, who dropped out earlier this week with an undisclosed injury, Born will face Dwight Grant at UFC Vegas 7 (UFC on ESPN 15) this weekend. That bout takes place at welterweight.
The fight may even have been meant to be, as you can see from the fortune below.
Born, who typically fights out of Chute Boxe in Kansas City, has a 7-1 record as a professional with a slew of amateur bouts to compliment it. The 32-year old holds black belts in Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, and Gong Fu, with grappling being his biggest strength. He’s fought for C3 Fights and LFA, but the majority of his fights have been for Shamrock FC, where he went 4-0 with four first round finishes. His most recent bout came in February at Shamrock FC 328 against Craig Farley. He won that fight by guillotine choke in the first round.
UFC on ESPN 15 is headlined by the bantamweight debut of Frankie Edgar, who takes on Pedro Munhoz.
