The UFC’s second date on Fight Island — UFC Fight Island 1, following this past weekend’s PPV — took place Wednesday, with a key featherweight fight in the main event. Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige were both looking to break into title contention, with the winner likely to jump at least a few spots up the 145lb rankings.
Also on the ESPN card, a flyweight co-main event thrust into the spotlight by the loss of the Frankie Edgar vs. Pedro Munhoz fight. With that bout moved to UFC 252, Tim Elliott and Ryan Benoit found themselves promoted from prelims to penultimate fight of the night.
Jimmie Rivera and Cody Stamann clashed earlier in the evening, a pair of bantamweights throwing down at 145lbs, a result of the short-notice nature of the booking. And opening the main card, the UAE’s own Mounir Lazzez made his octagon debut. After being signed following a friend showing Dana White his highlight reel at a birthday party, Lazzez had a huge opportunity against the returning Abdul Razak Alhassan.
