Anthony Smith is an extremely likeable figure among UFC fighters. So is Glover Teixeira. The nature of MMA, of course, is that one fighter has to loose. But when the two came together in the UFC Jacksonville main event, after being cordial all week, you pretty much just hoped for the best.
The end result, well, it was a pretty one-sided beatdown by Teixeira. Competitive early, but soon, Teixeira began lighting his opponent up. In the third and fourth rounds, Smith was rocked. Clearly not 100% in control. That “lionheart” tenacity of his kept him going, but all that did was extend the beatdown. Between rounds, Smith could be heard telling his corner that his teeth were loose (note, these were artificial teeth that had given him trouble in the past, if that helps).
The end result was a fifth round TKO for Glover Teixeira, who has now won four straight, and is suddenly a name again in the light heavyweight division. The only problem is that after his 2014 loss to Jon Jones, there hasn’t been much support for a rematch between the two. Perhaps that will change after Wednesday’s performance. However it’s more likely that Teixeira will need to take another fight — perhaps against either Dominick Reyes or Jan Blachowicz, which ever one doesn’t end up fighting Jones next.
In the meantime, see how the pros reacted to the UFC Jacksonville main event below! Jon Jones had a couple of things to say on the matter.
That was hard to watch :/
I feel like everytime the ref was going to stop it, Glover start trying a sub.— Olivier Aubin (@oliaubin) May 14, 2020

As a fighter I will never quit. I hope that my corner will speak for me when I’m too proud to back down. Teeth falling out is a big warning sign. That was hard to watch. Congrats @gloverteixeira

@BrendanSchaub why did I hear you say that 😂😂😂 https://t.co/qVH7tmDWTa

It sounds like Smith has no head coach in his corner and just a group of his buds.
As a fighter you should always delegate roles way before the camp even starts.

Anthony Smith has the heart of a lion. A true go out in his shield warrior.
So grateful I get to call him a friend/brother #UFCJAX

Fighters need to choose corners wisely. That corner should have helped call the fight and end it. In a way they failed him today. #UFCJAX

It seems like almost everyone who trash talk me during their fight week ends up losing. These boys thinking about being the champ instead of focusing on what it takes to get there. https://t.co/8LlrPgyHhf
