Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero finally had their highly-anticipated middleweight title clash last night (Sat. March 7, 2020) – and it was not what we expected.
Adesanya and Romero went all five rounds in what many complain was an extremely disappointing fight. Both Adesanya and Romero were extremely tentative in their styles, with Adesanya more so playing the role of counter striker out of respect for the Cuban’s ridiculous power. Throughout the course of the fight, Adesanya badly bruised the lead leg of Romero with low kicks. When it was all said and done, Adesanya did just a bit more to earn the winning nod.
“Stylebender” picked up his first official title defense of his career with a unanimous decision win. Now, with Adesanya vs. Romero in the rearview mirror, it’s likely Paulo Costa – who was sitting cageside for all the action – is next in line for the Nigerian-born champion. With all that being said, the mixed martial arts (MMA) community has taken to Twitter to offer their thoughts on tonight’s main event.
For the most part, even the pros sympathize with the fans, calling the action uneventful. There were even some who suggest they believe Romero should’ve been given the victory on the scorecards. Check out how the MMA community reacted to the main event below:
well that was anticlimactic

Just terrible. At least he had Weili vs JJ

I got fired for that…

Adesanya won I think. You can’t take too much risk with Yoel though.

Man it was weird but I had Yoel winning the last round which would be #AndNew 3-2 for Yoel. But I don’t know what the hell just happened! 😂

I practically never ask anyone to repeat themselves if I can’t or didn’t actually hear what they were saying…I just kinda nod & smile & grumble a “yeah, cool”…I wish I could ask people to repeat themselves…#SmoothConfessions

Fear is a big motivator. Sometimes it motivates you to do nothing.

Yoel Romero won that fight. Weirdest fight I have ever seen. @ufc #ufc

Romero was smart to wait for the counter striker Adesanya early in the fight. He was trying to get him to come forward and land a big shot. Almost worked. This was a tactical fight between two smart & disciplined fighters. #UFC248

So after the ladies that title fight came across as light sparrring. But sometimes that’s how the fight game goes. #ufc248

I love Izzy, but in my honest opinion, Romero won that due to extreme inactivity on both parties but Romero doing slightly more. #UFC248

Not even Adesanya believe he won…I had Romero all the way!
— Rafael dos Anjos (@RdosAnjosMMA) March 8, 2020
I had it 4-1 for @YoelRomeroMMA 🤷♂️
