At long last, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov look set to collide. On no less than four past occasions, the lightweight duo have been booked opposite one another by the UFC. Each time, some malady or other has scuttled the fight. UFC 249, however, will hope to change that.
Fingers crossed.
Since the pair was first scheduled to tango, Ferguson has managed to compile a 12-fight winning streak. That incredible tear through the 155lb division includes wins over Cowboy Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, and Rafael dos Anjos.
Champ Khabib Nurmagomedov’s streak may be even more impressive. He remains undefeated in his career, at 28-0. A full 12 of those wins have come inside the octagon. Among the names Khabib has defeated are Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Rafael Dos Anjos, Al Iaquinta, and Edson Barboza.
While Khabib vs. Ferguson may have Vegas written all over it, UFC 229 changed that for the champion. Nurmagomedov, after sparking a near-riot at the event at the T-Mobile Arena in October 2018, vowed not to fight in Nevada again, after the Nevada commission suspended and fined him for his actions.
Nevada’s loss is New York’s gain, and the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn will host what is likely to be one of the biggest fights in 2020 on April 18, 2020.
