The UFC is set to crown a new flyweight champion this weekend at UFC Norfolk.
It might seem an odd couple of a pairing, but the UFC men’s flyweights and women’s featherweights are the stars of the show in Norfolk, Virginia this weekend. That’s the two least-populous divisions in the promotion, for those counting. The card is topped by Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo, vying for the now-vacant flyweight championship that Henry Cejudo claimed not that long ago.
With Cejudo focusing on bantamweight when he returns from an injury-related layoff later this year, the belt was up for grabs — and Benavidez, for one, was an obvious choice. Brazil’s Figueiredo, if we’re being honest, was not far behind. It’s a match-up that promises fireworks.
In the UFC Norfolk co-main event, Felicia Spencer looks to get back in the win column after a hard-fought loss against Cris Cyborg last summer. Spencer has been a promotional darling through two fights with the organization thus far. It’s clear they think highly of her, and she’s getting her second co-feature slot in Norfolk as a result. She’ll take on France’s Zarah Fairn, while fellow Invicta FC alum Megan Anderson takes on Norma Dumont in another featherweight bout.
The general consensus is that a big showing from one of the featherweights, particularly Anderson or Spencer, could land that fighter a shot at Amanda Nunes’ 145lb title.
Before the action all goes down Saturday there was one last promotional push, with the ceremonial weigh-in and face-offs going down live from Norfolk at 4:30PM ET. Tune in then to watch it all unfold in the live stream above, and stay tuned for highlights after as Cageside Press will be live on the scene.
