Virna Jandiroba, a former Invicta FC champion, earned her first UFC victory with a second-round submission against Mallory Martin at UFC DC.
Virna Jandiroba has dealt with some opponent shuffling prior to UFC DC. She was originally set to fight Cortney Casey, then Livia Renata Souza, and now Mallory Martin. Jandiroba was 14-0 and the Invicta FC strawweight champion when she joined the UFC, then lost to former champion Carla Esparza in her debut. Martin, a Contender Series veteran, is on a five-fight win streak heading into her promotional debut and is 3-1 in Invicta.
An exchange of punches started the fight, then a charging combination by Martin. Jandiroba responded with a takedown right into a guillotine attempt by Martin. Jandiroba got to half guard while Martin was still holding onto the guillotine. Jandiroba kept pushing forward, moving to mount and transitioning to an arm triangle as Martin refused to let go of the headlock. Martin used the cage to escape and stood up. After a period of time on the feet in which nothing of significance happened, Jandiroba landed another takedown and had to fight off another guillotine attempt before time expired.
An overhand right from Jandiroba kicked things off in the second round, then a charging combination from her opponent. Just like the first round, Jandiroba nailed Martin with a takedown, taking the back of Martin quickly this time around. The grappling specialist locked up a rear-naked choke and Martin had no way to escape, forcing the tap in the second round.
Jandiroba was understandably overcome with emotions after getting that first UFC victory and thanked Martin for taking the fight on short notice.
