The rarest of the rare, a title fight on a Fight Night card held outside prime time and outside the USA, was set to go down Saturday at UFC Shenzhen.
Planning on being up bright and early on Saturday? Then UFC Shenzhen awaits.
What might otherwise have been a throwaway card mattered as the UFC continued to work at breaking into mainland China. The construction of a UFC Performance Institute there was an indication that the promotion had China in their long-term plans, but the lack of a real Chinese star was hampering them. Especially as rival ONE Championship had beaten them to the punch, already making repeated trips to the nation. Title fights in tow.
However, a title shot for Weili Zhang — winner of nineteen straight fights, three under the UFC banner — gave the UFC the opportunity to create the Chinese star they so coveted. She was set to challenge Jessica Andrade for the 115lb title, on what was a rather top-heavy card overall.
Check in Friday morning for weigh-in results for all fights on the card!
