Veronica Macedo earned the first UFC win of her career at UFC Uruguay, submitting Polyana Viana by armbar early in round one.
Venezuelan Veronica Macedo was looking for her first UFC victory heading into her bout with Brazilian Polyana Viana in Montevideo. The 23-year-old made her promotional debut in 2016, going 0-3 since joining the promotion. In her most recent bout, Macedo was submitted by Gillian Robertson at UFC Prague in February of this year. She made the move to flyweight last year, going 0-2 since dropping down from bantamweight.
Viana was on a losing streak as well. She’s 1-2 in her time in the promotion, losing her last two fights. Viana lost a split-decision to Hannah Cifers earlier this year, and decided to return to flyweight for her bout in Montevideo. She’s spent the majority of her career at strawweight, last competing at 125-pounds in July of 2015. Viana replaced Rachael Ostovich on the card due to an injury.
Viana took the center of the Octagon to start the fight, firing a kick for the first strike of the fight. Macedo responded with a spinning back kick to the body, but would end up on her back after a takedown by Viana. Viana was doing well on top, working for position, but Macedo did well to grab the arm of Viana during a transition. Snapping on an armbar, Macedo went from in trouble to in control, earning the verbal submission a little more than a minute into the fight. It was Macedo’s first career UFC victory, and the fastest submission in the promotion’s women’s flyweight history.
