LFA middleweight champ Brendan Allen, heavyweight prospect Don’Tale Mayes, and more were on deck at Dana White’s Contender Series this week.
Another week, another edition of Dana White’s Contender Series. After five contracts were awarded in a historic first, what would happen in week four? Probably not five contracts, but the night certainly held promise.
Before even getting to fight night, however, one fighter had a serious misstep. Kevin Syler, set for a featherweight clash with Lance Lawrence, came in closer to the lightweight limit at weigh-ins on Monday. As a result, he’ll be forfeiting 30% of his purse. However, it’s worth noting that UFC President and series namesake Dana White has gone on record as saying that missing weight doesn’t necessarily mean a contract won’t be rewarded. So Syler still has a chance at winning his way into the UFC — he’s just really going to have to impress in order to do so.
As always, a heavyweight fight on a Contender Series card is a positive. In Week 4, it’s Don’Tale Mayes vs. Ricardo Prasel. The division is always in need of fresh blood, so this fight will be one to keep an eye on. An impressive finish, and a contract here is likely.
Another standout on the card, defending LFA middleweight champion Brendan Allen. Allen has been fighting atop LFA cards for a while, and has gone toe-to-toe with the likes of Eryk Anders in that promotion. Of late, Allen has really come into his own, and he certainly seems UFC ready.
