After losing a fight with Liz Carmouche, Roxanne Modafferi has a rematch with Brazil’s Jennifer Maia pending.
Roxanne Modafferi, coming off a big win in Russia earlier this year, had been anticipated to meet Liz Carmouche at the upcoming UFC San Antonio next month. However, the powers that be within the UFC opted to move Carmouche into a title fight with Valentina Shevchenko. That left Modafferi in need of a new opponent, and as it turns out, it’s a familiar foe. ‘The Happy Warrior’ will face Jennifer Maia, with the pair having previously met in Invicta FC.
Modafferi (23–15) defeated Antonnina Shevchenko, sister of champ Valentina, in a split decision at UFC St. Petersburg in April. Since returning to the UFC as part of The Ultimate Fighter 26, which introduced the women’s flyweight division, Modafferi is 2-2, with wins against Barb Honchak and Shevchenko, and losses to Sijara Eubanks and Nicco Montano, the latter with the title on the line.
Prior to her return, Modafferi faced Maia (16-5-1) with Invicta flyweight gold on the line. Their first meeting at Invicta FC 19 was a thrilling outing, and one of Modafferi’s best performances. It ended in a split decision win for Maia.
Since joining the UFC, former Invicta champ Maia has gone 1-1, losing her debut against Carmouche, then picking up a win over Alexis Davis at UFC Nashville in March.
UFC San Antonio (UFC on ESPN 4) takes place July 20, 2019 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
