Eddie Wineland proved too much to handle for UFC newcomer Grigory Popov at UFC 238 on Saturday night.
Former WEC bantamweight champ Eddie Wineland was back in action at UFC 238 in Chicago on Saturday. Wineland was tasked with welcoming Grigory Popov to the promotion, after losing two straight. The veteran of the UFC and WEC was stepping into the octagon for the first time in 2019.
Round 1
Wineland gets right after Popov at the start of the fight. Popov is trying to keep distance with the front kick but Wineland is landing powerful right hands. The pressure and power shots of Wineland has caused a cut above the left eye of Popov. The newcomer, Popov is finding more success with his kicks, getting the respect of Wineland. Popov begins using the teep kick to the gut more often. The Russian though is getting countered holding his hands low as Wineland continues attacking with the right hand visibly stunning Popov.

Round 2
Both come out throwing and Popov stuns Wineland dropping him briefly to his knee. Wineland is still a little flustered as he shot for a takedown, but Popov shrugged it off. Popov fails to press on Wineland and it allows Wineland to recover. Wineland is starting to land beautiful shots in his combinations, increasing his output. Wineland lands a big right hand again which freezes Popov, following which Wineland lands three more rights dropping Popov. Wineland allows Popov back up only to land a right hook on the temple dropping Popov to a knee sending the ref in.
