Former UFC flyweight contender Sergio Pettis has his next fight at bantamweight set against Ricardo Ramos at UFC Minneapolis.
Former UFC flyweight contender Sergio Pettis announced a move up to bantamweight last year, mostly due to the impending closure of the promotion’s flyweight division. After his loss to Jussier Formiga in October, he moved up to 135 pounds and fought Rob Font in December of last year. Despite coming up short in the bout against Font, it appears Pettis is set to stay at bantamweight.
As we learned Wednesday from Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel, Pettis is set to return in June in Minneapolis. His opponent is the Brazilian Ricardo Ramos. Ramos is coming off of a knockout loss to Said Nurmagomedov in February, however, prior to that, he had won three straight fights in the Octagon and is 4-1 in his last five fights overall.
Pettis, on the other hand, is 1-3 in his last three fights. However, prior to this current stint, he was seen as one of the 125-pound division’s finest talents. Prior to his loss to Formiga, he had won five of his last six fights, with the sole loss coming to current flyweight champion Henry Cejudo. He is also one of only three men to defeat Joseph Benavidez, the other two being Demetrious Johnson and Dominick Cruz.
UFC Minneapolis is set to be headlined by former welterweight champions Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler in a five-round rematch. The pair first met at UFC 201, where Woodley won the welterweight title from Lawler via first-round knockout. Both fighters last fought in March, where they both came up short. Lawler losing via controversial first-round submission to Ben Askren, and Woodley losing his welterweight championship to Kamaru Usman via lopsided decision.
