The full slate of fighters at UFC Philadelphia hit the scales Friday morning for the one and only weigh-in for the promotion’s second ESPN event.
UFC Philadelphia, or UFC on ESPN 2, goes down Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia, PA. Headlining the card is one of “those” fights. A.k.a. one of those fights that fans cannot wait for. If you’re an MMA fan, you’ve been chomping at the bit for Justin Gaethje vs. Edson Barboza. The rest of the card is just window dressing (though it is a very solid card all around).
That main event is the kind of scrap that Fights of the Year are made of. Yet aside from that, you have the return of Josh Emmett, against Michael Johnson. A chance for Michelle Waterson to move into striking distance of a title shot. The debut of Sabina Mazo, an undefeated flyweight prospect earlier in the night. And the return of former flyweight title challenger Ray Borg.
The early and only weigh-ins for the UFC’s second showing on ESPN proper kick off at 9AM EST. Cageside Press is on hand in Wilmington, Delaware, just outside Philly, to bring you updates!
After a steady stream of fighters hit the scales early, four names remained to weigh in for UFC Philadelphia: Michael Johnson, Ray Borg, Casey Kenney, and headliner Justin Gaethje. Gaethje’s opponent, Edson Barboza, hit the mark earlier in the morning. Just before 10AM, Gaethje did as well, making the main event official!
In the end, only Ray Borg would miss weight, coming in at 137.25lbs for his bantamweight fight. He would not continue cutting after hitting the scales (despite rules allowing an additional two hours under the Philadelphia commission). 20% would be forfeited to opponent Casey Kenney. Michael Johnson, meanwhile, weighed in last, but made the featherweight limit at 146lbs.
