UFC Ottawa added a very solid featherweight battle between veteran Cub Swanson and exciting young fighter Shane Burgos.
The Toronto Sun was the first to report the addition to UFC Ottawa.
Cub Swanson has struggled recently, losing to three top-10 fighters in a row. Now, he’ll face an up-and-comer in Shane Burgos, who has lost just once in his career. Both men are known for their exciting styles, so this should be a great addition to the Canadian card.
Cub Swanson was a fan-favorite in the WEC days, going 5-3 with three Fight of the Night bonuses. After falling in his UFC debut, Swanson won six straight fights with four post-fight bonuses. Swanson went on a four-fight win streak in 2016 after falling to Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar. Unfortunately, he hasn’t won since then, losing to top contenders Brian Ortega, Frankie Edgar, and Renato Moicano. After falling to Ortega, rumors surrounded Swanson, assuming he would sign with a non-UFC promotion. However, he re-upped with the biggest promotion for a six-fight deal.
Shane Burgos was 7-0 with seven stoppages when he signed with the UFC. Burgos won his first three fights in the Octagon before losing in a Fight of the Night to Calvin Kattar. Burgos rebounded with a first-round submission in November.
UFC Ottawa will take place on May 4 inside the Canadian Tire Centre in Ontario, Canada. The ESPN+ card is headlined by a lightweight clash between Donald Cerrone vs. Al Iaquinta with a co-main event of Elias Theodorou vs. Derek Brunson.
