The UFC Philadelphia card is continually taking shape. Newly added to the card is a bantamweight bout between Ray Borg and Pingyuan Liu.
The addition to UFC Philadelphia was first reported by The Philly Voice.
It’s Ray Borg’s first fight back since being on the receiving end of the highlight reel finish from Demetrious Johnson in October of 2017. It’s not for a lack of trying. Due to the Conor McGregor bus incident at UFC 223, Borg’s bout with Brandon Moreno fell apart. That fight was rescheduled twice, but Borg had to pull out for a host of medical reasons, most notably from remains of glass in his eye from the bus attack.
Then, after a scheduled fight with Joseph Benavidez, which Borg was forced to pull out, his newborn son came down with hydrocephalus, a dangerous birth condition, and had to fight with family through that tough time. After crowd sourcing and raising more than $37,000, his son looks to be doing much better. It’s also worth noting that this will be Borg’s first official contest in the bantamweight division after missing weight twice at flyweight.
Pingyuan Liu is riding a hot win streak coming into this fight. He has won his last 10 fights and is 2-0 in the UFC. His last outing was against Martin Day, which Day took on short notice. The fight was one of the better ones on the night going to a razor-thin split decision. Borg will be a step up for Liu, who has major aspirations in the bantamweight division.
UFC Philadelphia is headlined by the return of Justin Gaethje and Edson Barboza. Gaethje is coming off a first-round knockout of James Vick. Barboza, on the other hand, is coming off a dominant victory over Dan Hooker at UFC Milwaukee. Also on the card is a women’s strawweight bout between Michelle Waterson and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
