Another fight, another upset, as Corey Browning defeated Aaron Chalmers on the main card of Bellator Newcastle.
Corey Browning yet again upset the apple cart and derailed a hype train. Coming fresh off his win against Baby Slice, Browning faced hometown hero Aaron Chalmers at Bellator Newcastle in what was the novice’s fifth fight.
The step-up in class was immediately evident, with the American pressing ‘The Joker’ against the cage. Chalmers, however, took the first round in the exchanges on the feet. In what was a dog fight, Chalmers landed the cleaner shots and knocked down his opponent. However, walking off instead of pursuing a finish, was a clear sign of inexperience.
Both fighters lived to see the second round. Browning dominated the round with ground-and-pound, the referee was looking closely during the sustained pressure but with not much landing cleanly, the fight went to the third.
Chalmers rushed, trying to engage immediately, perhaps to his detriment as Browning enjoyed the exchange and managed to submit his opponent with a slick heel-hook in the early proceedings of the final round.
This represented a second consecutive upset victory for Corey Browning, handing Chalmers his first loss since entering the MMA scene.
