Despite winning The Ultimate Fighter 28 at featherweight, Macy Chiasson will make the cut to 135lbs when she meets Gina Mazany at UFC 235.
That didn’t take long. Ultimate Fighter 28 winner Macy Chiasson has her next UFC fight set, and it’s not in the featherweight division. Chiasson, who won TUF 28 at 145lbs, will head to bantamweight when she takes on Gina Mazany at UFC 235 in March. The Las Vegas Review-Journal was first to report the news.
Chiasson (3-0) turned pro just last year, after a couple of years on the amateur circuit. She defeated former Invicta FC standout Pannie Kianzad to win TUF 28 and the UFC contract that comes with winning the show. Chiasson also faced current Invicta FC featherweight champ Felicia Spencer back in the pair’s amateur days, losing that 2014 meeting by unanimous decision.
Defeating Larissa Pacheco and Leah Letson on her way to capturing the TUF women’s featherweight crown, Chiasson was a standout from the get-go. However, the knock on the entire season was the lack of true featherweights on the roster. With only Cris Cyborg and Megan Anderson clearly established as featherweights in the UFC, this booking doesn’t bode well for the weight class. Germain de Randamie, the inaugural UFC 145lb champ, has already dropped back down to featherweight, and two-time title challenger Holly Holm has also returned to the division she once held the title in.
Chiasson fought as high as lightweight earlier in her career.
Gina Mazany (5-2), meanwhile, will be looking for her second UFC win against Chiasson. She’s coming off a loss against Lina Lansberg at UFC Liverpool in May. Prior to that, she secured her first win in the promotion, defeating Yanan Wu at UFC Shanghai in November 2017.
UFC 235 takes place March 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. No main event has been announced as of yet for the card.
