Opening up the main card at UFC Moncton was a back-and-forth fight between Alex Garcia and Court McGee, in which McGee was able to outlast his opponent.
UFC Moncton went down Saturday night from the Avenir Centre in New Brunswick, Canada. The main card kicked off with the Welterweight’s. Alex Garcia entered the night and looked to bounce back after a unanimous decision loss to Ryan LaFlare. Former TUF winner Court McGee looked to get back on track after dropping his last two fights, with his most recent being a unanimous decision loss to Sean Strickland.
Alex Garcia started the fight with a left hand over the top that did not do much damage. Garcia had the center of the Octagon early catching a kick and dragging McGee down. McGee popped up but Garcia stayed on him. McGee was brought down eventually and Garcia took his back. McGee stood up with Garcia hanging on, shaking him off after a bit of a struggle. Garcia tried to find his range with some big looping punches but they came up short. As the final seconds were ticking, McGee landed a huge double leg takedown, but it was not quite enough to steal the round.
Garcia was swinging for the fences to start the round, clipping McGee several times. However, McGee was able to knock down his opponent. McGee followed up with heavy shots. Garcia was able to weather the storm, and McGee pinned him down in guard for several minutes before the ref stood them up. The former TUF winner pushed Garcia to the fence and took him down to ride out the round on top.
Wrestling was the formula for both fighters in the third round. Garcia was able to drag McGee down, but wasn’t able to keep him there. McGee popped up and shot for a takedown of his own. Garcia stuffed it and scored a takedown, but McGee reversed position an kept Garcia on his back for the remainder of the fight achieving mount at one point.
It was a hard-fought victory for Court McGee, who certainly needed the win.
