The lightweight title fight rematch between Brent Primus and Michael Chandler is on!
A lightweight title rematch for this April has been made official, Bellator MMA announced today. In a press release, the promotion confirmed earlier reports of the pair meeting, something that was wildly speculated on following Chandler’s recent win over Goiti Yamauchi at Bellator 192. In the pair’s first meeting at Bellator NYC last June, a leg injury saw then-champ Michael Chandler lose the title to Primus. The fight became a memorable moment in Bellator history, with Chandler bellowing “cut it off!” in regards to the injured limb.
The rematch will go down at The Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo., which Bellator will visit for the first time on Friday, April 13. No other fights were announced for the card, which does not yet have a number.
Primus (8-0) is undefeated as a professional thus far in his career. He’s perfect in six Bellator MMA appearances, but has not set foot in the cage since the win over Chandler in June. Beyond Chandler, Primus holds a notable win over Derek Anderson at Bellator 141.
Chandler, meanwhile, became the face of Bellator MMA in the wake of his classic bouts against former Bellator/UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez. With wins over Benson Henderson, Patricky Freire, Alvarez, and a host of others, Chandler (17–4) can make an argument for being one of the best 155lb’ers in the game today. Though he has talked at length about taking high profile bouts over a rematch with Prmus, it appears the promotion is getting its wish in re-booking the pair.
Expect more details on this card in the coming weeks.
