Former light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira put himself back in the mix with a big win at UFC Winnipeg on Saturday night.
Opening the UFC on FOX 26 main card in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Saturday was a hotly anticipated light heavyweight scrap. Brazil’s Misha Glover Teixeira ventured north to take on another of the division’s heavy hitters, Misha Cirkunov. Teixeira, who previously dropped a title shot to former champ Jon Jones, was 1-2 in his past three. He’d dropped fights to Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson, while scoring a win over Jared Cannonier. Cirkunov, meanwhile, entered the night off a loss to current title challenger Volkan Oezdemir.
How’d the bout play out?
Misha Cirkunov went on the offensive early, tagging Glover Teixeira a number of times along the fence. Just when it was looking back for the Brazilian, Teixeira landed a takedown. Quickly taking the back, he looked to sink in a rear-naked choke. Cirkunov was able to survive, but couldn’t get away. Rolling over to his belly, with Teixeira on his back, Cirkunov was forced to cover up. The Brazilian rained some heavy shots down as the ref encouraged Misha Cirkunov to fight back. When he didn’t, there was no other option — and the fight was called off.
