UFC Fight Night 119 took place Saturday night in Sao Paulo, where in middleweight action, Brazil’s own Antonio Carlos Junior took on Jack Marshman.
With the UFC touching down in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Saturday night, there was an abundance of Brazilian fighters on the card. Appearing on the televised preliminary portion of UFC Sao Paulo was João Pessoa’s Antonio Carlos Junior, taking on Welsh fighter Jack Marshman.
Carlos Junior entered the night on a three fight win streak, having most recently submitted Eric Spicely at UFC 212 in June. Marshman, meanwhile, came in off a win over Ryan Janes in June.
From the outset in this battle, Jack Marshman looked to counter while Antonio Carlos Junior pushed forward. The Brazilian fighter looked light on his feet, cutting off the cage, stalking Marshman much as a predator stalks his prey. He landed a solid combo not long after the start of the round, testing Marshman’s chin early, and capping it off with a leg kick. That sequence led to a trip along the cage for Carlos Junior, who landed on top.
After steady, workman-like progress on top, Carlos Junior moved to mount, bringing the crowd to life. Marshman, in an extraordinarily bad spot, tried to buck him off in the final minute of the round. Could he run out the clock? No. With mount, Carlos Junior was in full control, and that would set the stage for a submission finish. The Brazilian would sink in a rear-naked choke, earning the tap with just thirty seconds remaining in the first round.
