ONE Championship returned to Kuala Lumpur Friday with Quest for Greatness, headlined by a featherweight title fight between Marat Gafurov and Martin Nguyen. Learning from their first bout, Nguyen was able to escape the dangerous submission game of Gafurov, and finished him in the second round of their main event bout. A well-timed right hand dropped the Russian fighter, who exited the cage after regaining his senses after winding up face down on the canvas. With that, Australia’s Nguyen avenged his prior loss to Gafurov, and later dedicated the bout to his late father.
Also on the card, Ev Ting defeated Nobutatsu Suzuki in the co-main event, taking less than a round to finish the former welterweight champion. Former welterweight title challenger Agilan Thani, meanwhile, bounced back from his loss to champ Ben Askren by defeating Sherif Mohamed in a three round unanimous decision. Askren, it should be noted, has been announced as headlining the promotion’s debut in Shanghai, China early next month.
