With that in mind, there was a little extra star power on display. Outside of Thai star Saenchai taking on Ibragim Abdulmedzhidov in the main event, kickboxing star Nieky Holzken was in action against Sinsamut Klinmee, while on the MMA side, veteran atomweight Meng Bo returned. Bo had an early career win over UFC women’s strawweight champ Weili Zhang, and was paired up with fellow ONE star Xiong Jing Nan, dropping down from ONE’s strawweight division.

The second atomweight grand prix quarterfinal at ONE Championship’s Empower on Friday saw Indian wrestler Ritu Phogat paired up with Chinese veteran Meng Bo.

Bo had been seen by many as a potential finalist in the tournament, while Phogat was just one fight removed from a shock defeat at the hands of Bi Nguyen. That loss had been the first of Phogat’s MMA career.

Come Friday, the “Indian Tigress” had to overcome some early adversity — but once she did, it was smooth sailing.

After some feeling out on the feet, Ritu Phogat played to her strengths and shot for a takedown in the opening round — but she was low and too far out, with Bo easily pulling free. China’s Bo showed some strong defensive wrestling throughout the round, and kept the fight on the feet — much to the chagrin of Phogat. Towards the end of the round, Meng Bo rocked the Indian wrestler, and immediately turned up the heat. She battered Phogat alongside the fence, spent some time on top landing ground n’ pound, then went belly down for an arm-bar attempt. Phogat would gut it out, but needed to correct course in round two.

She did just that early. An ankle pick led to an eventual takedown, and with Meng Bo having expended a lot of energy at the end of the first hunting the finish, the wrestler appeared to be the fresher fighter. Phogat went to work in side control, throwing hammer fists and elbows. Meng Bo scrambled to her knees, but Phogat controlled from the back, keeping her down. The position allowed Phogat to throw knees, with Bo now in a precarious spot. She’d wind up on her back again after that, Phogat working from half guard. They’d finish the round on the feet, with Phogat finding a home for her right hand.

The comeback is REAL for "The Indian Tigress!" 💪 @PhogatRitu #ONEEmpower #WeAreONE #ONEChampionship pic.twitter.com/8R5UWemIq0

With the fight still up for grabs, the third round saw an early front kick from Meng Bo hit the head of Phogat as she was moving forward, but Phogat survived. They’d tie up by the fence, then go to the ground with India’s Phogat once again in side control. The shots to the body were taking the wind out of Meng Bo’s sails. Phogat was in control in half guard, dropping ground n’ pound as the final bell sounded.

In the end, it was another strong showing from Phogat. She claimed the unanimous decision victory, and moves forward in the grand prix.

The word “historic” is bandied about all too frequently in combat sports. When you get right down to it, every title fight is billed as historic, and with so many promotions and titles in the mix, the word has become little more than a watered down marketing term. Yet ONE Championship’s Empower card is one of those moments that is, in actuality, historic.

Friday’s Empower marks the first all-female event in a major promotion outside of Invicta FC (which is all-female, period). It sees the launch of the promotion’s atomweight grand prix, comprised of 16 top talents, plus alternates. And it is capped off by Chinese strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan defending her title against decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Michelle Nicolini.

As interesting as that title fight is, the real meat of Empower is the grand prix. The entrants range from prospect to veteran, and include former champions inside and outside of ONE Championship. With a title shot against atomweight champ Angela Lee on the line, the stakes are high for the tournament, which will play out over several events.

ONE: Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Preview

Mei Yamaguchi Credit: ONE Championship

Mei Yamaguchi vs. Julie Mezabarba

We’ll start off with the atomweight grand prix alternate bout scheduled for Friday’s Empower card.

Yamaguchi vs. Mezabarba is one of two alternate bouts that were originally announced for the event, but the second appears to have dropped off the bill. That was to feature the winner of Bi Nguyen vs. Jenelyn Olsim against American Grace Cleveland. Olsim won the fight, which aired as part of last week’s Battleground III card, but Olsim vs. Cleveland is not on the official bout sheet for Empower.

That leaves Yamaguchi vs. Mezabarba as the lone alternate bout Friday. And one that should highly favor the Japanese fighter. Yamaguchi should need no introduction: she’s a veteran of the fight game sporting a 21-12-1 record. Yamaguchi fought for the inaugural ONE Championship atomweight title in 2016, losing a unanimous decision against Angela Lee. The pair would face off in a rematch two years later; the result was the same.

Despite her struggles against Lee, Yamaguchi’s ground game should serve her well, and her experience will no doubt be a big factor — both in terms of years, and big fight experience. Yamaguchi has faced off with some of the best female fighters inside and outside of Japan over the years, including Emi Fujino, Seo Hee Ham, Ayaka Hamasaki, and more. While she has lost to Ham and Denice Zamboanga, both of whom are in the atomweight grand prix, there’s one factor that could be huge: prior to her career with ONE Championship, Mei Yamaguchi won three grand prix tournaments.

Julie Mezabarba in a question mark in this one. With a record of 8-2-1, the Brazilian is making her promotional debut at ONE: Empower. The fight will mark her second of 2021; she picked up a victory via unanimous decision earlier this year on the regional scene at home in Brazil.

Meng Bo (17-5) is one of the more experienced fighters set to compete in ONE Championship’s upcoming atomweight grand prix. Kicking off on May 28 at the all-female Empower card, Bo has been paired up with a standout wrestler in India’s Ritu Phogat.

China’s Bo, competing as a professional since 2013, has seen plenty of opponents come and go. Few are likely to have won gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, as Phogat did in freestyle wrestling. But Bo wasn’t ready to deem Phogat the toughest wrestler she’s been booked against, she told Cageside Press during a recent virtual media day promoting the grand prix.

“I could tell she’s a strong opponent from watching her past fights. But we haven’t faced each other yet. Anything could happen when we face each other, said Bo. That said, she has most certainly been working on stuffing those takedowns.

“Yes, of course. I started my training camp already, and I’ve been working on takedown defense and defense back behind the circle,” admitted Bo.

Like many, if not all, of the grand prix competitors, Meng Bo has big plans, big dreams ahead, and she is certain that she can reach them. “I have 100% confidence in winning this grand prix,” said Bo during the Empower media day. “Because my ultimate goal is not just to win the grand prix belt. My ultimate goal is to beat Angela Lee and get the world championship belt.”

Champ Lee is currently taking time off from fighting to start her family. But she will be awaiting the winner of the atomweight grand prix down the road.

Just missing International Women’s Day, ONE Championship has announced an all-female fight card to take place later this year. Titled Empower, the five-fight card revealed Thursday will culminate with a strawweight title fight.

The event is expected to be broadcast live on May 28, 2021.

In the main event of ONE: Empower, women’s strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan (15-2) will defend her title against Michelle Nicolini. Jing Nan last competed in October against Tiffany Teo, defending her title in the process. Prior to that, the Chinese fighter had dropped to atomweight for a shot at a second title, only to come up short against Angela Lee (Lee herself had previously moved up and challenged for Jing Nan’s own title, also falling short).

Michelle Nicolini (6-2) defeated Lee in a strawweight bout in July of 2019. The Brazilian has won multiple gold medals in jiu-jitsu at the international level, and claimed gold at the ADCC Word Championship in 2013. She is also the only female athlete to win gold at the black belt level at all four major BJJ championship tournaments in both gi and no-gi. She has not, however, competed in MMA since 2019.

In addition to Xiong Jing Nan vs. Michelle Nicolini, ONE Championship’s Empower card will feature quarterfinal action from the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix.

Those bouts are:

Denice Zamboanga vs. Seo Hee Ham
Meng Bo vs. Ritu Phogat
Stamp Fairtex vs. Alyona Rassohyna
Itsuki Hirata vs. Alyse Anderson

Additional fights are expected to be announced at a later date.

Top Chinese contender Meng Bo (17-5), former UFC fighter and ROAD FC champ Seo Hee Ham (23-8), multi-sport champion Stamp Fairtex (5-1), Ukraine’s Alyona Rassohyna (13-4), who became the first woman to defeat Fairtex in MMA, American Alyse Anderson (5-1), a veteran of Invicta FC, undefeated Japanese prospect Itsuki Hirata (4-0), Indian wrestling standout Ritu Phogat (4-0), and undefeated Filipino standout Denice Zamboanga (8-0).

Ham, with the most experience of the group, will be making her promotional debut.

No backup fighters or brackets for the grand prix have been announced. However, the festivities will kick off on May 28 — which puts it outside the date range for ONE Championship’s upcoming debut run on American network TNT. The ONE on TNT series runs through April.

The winner of the ONE Championship World Atomweight Grand Prix will earn a shot at atomweight champ Angela Lee. One of the promotion’s biggest stars, Lee is currently on the sidelines awaiting the birth of her first child. No return date has been set for the champ, but she’ll have plenty of time as the tournament plays out.

With the atomweight grand prix looming, China’s Meng Bo improved to 3-0 under the ONE Championship banner at Unbreakable on Friday — going the distance in the promotion for the first time.

That’s not a bad spot to be in. But the Chinese fighter missed weight for Friday’s bout, against Samara Santos, throwing a wrench in the works. The fight wound up held at a 54.80 KG catchweight (note ONE’s modified weigh-in rules as well) as a result.

“I’m so sorry about the weight problem this time. As you know, it’s a very cold winter in China, so I had some trouble losing my weight,” Bo explained, speaking via translator at a post-fight interview attended by Cageside Press and other media outlets. Moving forward, Bo promised to “do her best” to ensure she comes in on weight.

Having improved to 17-5, with the atomweight grand prix not officially set yet, there’s a question of where Bo sits in the division. And how that might help her seeding when things do get underway.

“Because my opponent this time, Samara, is not in the atomweight division rankings, I think I’ll stay in the number two ranking,” suggested Bo. “If I have a chance next time, I wish I can have a fight with the number one ranked [fighter], Denice [Zamboanga], so I can prove I have the ability to get the number one rank.”

Zamboanga has been perfect in her own ONE Championship run, and MMA career, to date. A match-up between Bo and the Filipino fighter could very well be coming our way later this year as a result.

Former strawweight champ Yoshitaka Naito and grappling star Garry Tonon are among the latest names to join ONE Championship: Enter the Dragon.

May’s Enter the Dragon card from ONE Championship, set to go down in Singapore, continues to expand. On Tuesday, the promotion revealed via press release the addition of six new bouts, including former champ Yoshitaka Naito, and grapping ace Garry Tonon. The bouts join an event already headlined by lightweight champ Shinya Aoki defending his title against Christian Lee.

Naito (13-3), the former strawweight champion, has fallen on hard times of late. He’s just 1-3 in his last four bouts, including a pair of fights with Joshua Pacio, the promotion’s current strawweight champ. ‘Nobu’ will take on Alex Silva for the third time at Enter the Dragon, completing a trilogy that began in 2017. The pair each have one win over the other. Silva (7-3) has lost two straight, against Naito and Silva, both in 2018.

Garry Tonon (4-0) will continue his journey into MMA at the Singapore show. ‘The Lion Killer’ has won four straight since debuting in ONE Championship last year. This time out, he’ll take on Japan’s Yoshiki Nakahara (12-4). He rides into the fight against Tonon on a seven fight win streak.

Lightweight Amir Khan (11-5) will also be in action that night, facing Italy’s Iurie Lapicus. Lapicus (12-0) will be making his promotional debut. Mei Yamaguchi (19-11-1) will face China’s Meng Bo (13-5), and Rahul Raju (4-4), who will be a local favorite, is set to take on Richard “Notorious” Corminal (4-4) at lightweight. A final bout announced Tuesday will have Muay Thai star “Kru Rong” Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke square off with Miao Li Tao.
