With all three suffering losses at the Fight Night event, Ji Yeon Kim, Chase Sherman, and Jessica-Rose Clark have all been removed from the UFC roster.

UFC Roster Watch, an automated service that monitors the promotion’s athlete database, took note of the moves. Clark, who found herself submitted by octagon newcomer Tainara Lisboa, confirmed the news, noting that the fight had been the final bout on her UFC contract.

“That was the last fight on my contract. We’ve got plans for the next step and I’m so so excited!” wrote Clark on social media. “I’ll put a video on IG in the next couple of days once I’ve had a chance to decompress. Thank you everyone for the constant love and support.”

“Jessy-Jess” joined the UFC in 2017, and picked up wins over Bec Rawlings and Paige VanZant right out of the gate. She would go 2-5 after that, however, losing her last three fights, all by submission.

Ji Yeon Kim’s release should come as no surprise, after she let emotions overcome her against Mandy Bohm in Charlotte. Their grudge match got ugly when Kim hit her opponent with a kick after the bell at the end of one round, then kneed her in the head illegally in the third, ending the fight early.

Despite two points being deducted from the South Korean, the result was still a split decision in favor of Bohm. The loss was Kim’s fifth straight.

Chase Sherman, who stuck around the UFC thanks to his willingness to fight on short notice, was 1-6 in his past seven fights. He fell via decision to Karl Williams on the UFC Charlotte preliminary card.

Following a loss to Jake Collier in 2022, the promotion let Sherman walk at the end of his contract — but he was immediately re-signed to face Alexander Romanov on short notice. He wound up going 1-3 under his new deal, with a win over Jared Vanderaa, and losses to Williams, Romanov, and Waldo-Cortes Acosta.

Lisboa’s signing to the UFC might have had as much to do with her controversial Muay Thai loss to Valentina Shevchenko as it did with her current three-fight win streak — especially given Clark was by far the most experienced opponent she had faced to date.

Both ladies started the fight by throwing good combinations frequently. Both were having success with their hands before Clark shot in. She took a knee for her troubles but she still managed to push Lisboa against the cage. Clark tried to isolate a leg for a single but couldn’t take Lisboa down. That was thanks to Lisboa using a whizzer, and she ended up taking Clark down with a little under a minute left in the round. Not much happened but Lisboa ended the round on top.

In round two Clark landed a nice right hand to start the fight. Gaining some confidence from that she went again and Lisboa tagged her with a right hand. That hurt Clark badly as Clark shot in for a takedown. Clark did get a takedown but Lisboa bounced back up and got space. Back at range Lisboa landed another right and Clark landed an even bigger right hand. Lisboa backed Clark up with a right as it was evident she had more pop in her hands. Clark was landing, but everything Lisboa landed was giving Clark issues. Clark timed a nice takedown entry at the end of the round but didn’t turn the corner to get it down.

In the final round neither fighter wasted any time throwing combos. Lisboa got the best of it but made an error in a takedown where Clark landed on top. Clark landed a nice elbow that cut Lisboa and now both ladies were leaking. Lisboa slowly inched up her legs and eventually went for an armbar but nothing came out of it. Lisboa was able to push down on the head and scramble to take the back. From there she locked in a rear-naked choke, and Clark tapped. The finishing sequence happened so quickly and it was perfectly done from Lisboa.

Jessica-Rose Clark (11-8, 1NC) will welcome Tainara Lisboa (5-2) to the octagon at the card, which does not yet have a location or venue officially announced.

Iridium Sports Agency, who represent Clark, announced the news on Wednesday. Clark also confirmed the booking.

Australia’s Clark will be competing for the first time since a July 2022 submission loss to Julija Stoliarenko. “Miss Jessy Jess” has lost her last two fights by submission, in both cases tapping to an arm-bar. Prior to those setbacks, Clark had picked up back-to-back wins over Sarah Alpar and Joselyn Edwards.

Tainara Lisboa has won three straight fights, and has competed for the likes of Shooto Brasil and Thunder Fight in her native Brazil. The 31-year old first tested the waters in MMA in 2016, losing a bout against current UFC women’s featherweight Norma Dumont. She returned to the cage in 2019, taking up the sport full time and posting a 5-1 record since.

Lisboa previously competed in Muay Thai, facing current UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in 2010. The Muay Thai champion signed with the UFC last year.

No other fights besides Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Tainara Lisboa have been announced or reported for the UFC’s upcoming May 13 event.

Clark had seen a two-fight win streak halted in her last fight while Stoliarenko was fighting for her job, having lost three straight fights coming into the bout.

“Jessy Jess” hit the octagon walking out to “Sexy Boy,” the entrance theme of pro wrestling star Shawn Michaels. The choice was announced on The MMA Hour earlier this week, but the fun stopped moments later.

With the pair skipping the traditional touch of the gloves, both fighters took the center of the octagon. A low kick from Stoliarenko started the fight and then a high kick from Clark followed. Clark tagged Stoliarenko with a right hand and then charged her. Stoliarenko popped Clark with a 1-2 and then changed levels, taking her down. Stoliarenko immediately transitioned straight to an arm-bar and forced Clark to tap frantically — possibly dislocating her elbow in the process.

The angle the limb wound up at during the submission was simply horrifying, and Clark was clearly in pain and nursing her arm after the fight.

With her back firmly against the wall, Stoliarenko picked up her first UFC win, saving her spot on the roster. Clark on the other hand has dropped two straight and might be fighting her job in her next outing. That might be a while yet, and we hope that Clark quickly recovers from the injury sustained during the fight.

Egger, and Invicta FC and RIZIN FF alum, had for her part posted a 1-1 record through two fights in the promotion. Saturday, she got the chance to put her judo on display — and earned her biggest win to date.

With Clark vs. Egger underway, the pair spent a good deal of time in the clinch up along the fence. Clark was in the driver’s seat, Egger had her back to the fence. Eventually, they’d reverse, but Egger didn’t stay in control for long. It was close for a few minutes; they would finally go down in a trip/throw care of Egger, pop back up, drop again, and pop up again. Very closely matched. Egger would land another throw, her Judo really shining, and this time she stayed there, using a head lock to maintain control. A scramble saw Egger grab an arm, extending the limb — and moments later, she’d forced the tap!

With the win, Egger, who claimed a gold medal in Judo in the 2010 European U23 championships, improved to 2-1 in the octagon. She’s now built a modest two-fight win streak, while Clark saw her own two-fight streak snapped.

On Wednesday, Iridium Sports Agency revealed that their new client, Jessica-Rose Clark, will fight Stephanie Egger on February 19 at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event. Clark would confirm the fight on her own social media and announce that she had signed with Iridium Sports, leaving Ruby Sports.

Clark (11-6) returned from a year layoff due to a torn ACL in October, defeating Joselyne Edwards via unanimous decision. “Jessy Jess” is riding a two-fight win streak since losing her return to the bantamweight division in 2019.

Egger (6-2) picked up her first UFC win in her last outing. She finished Shanna Young at UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Walker via TKO. In her UFC debut, she lost to top prospect Tracy Cortez via unanimous decision, taking the fight on short notice.

The UFC’s February 19, 2022 event does not have an official location, venue, or broadcast plan announced, though the UFC recently applied to host several dates at the Apex in Las Vegas. Additionally, no main event has been announced for the event.

The current UFC women’s bantamweight and former UFC welterweight champion shared the UFC Vegas 11 card in September 2020 (Woodley headlined the Fight Night event against Colby Covington), and T-Wood would later offer to train with “Jessy-Jess” — though the offer, made on social media, sounded a bit more like a come-on.

“He and I had a private conversation about that,” Clark said with a laugh when asked about her response by Cageside Press. Speaking ahead of the World MMA Awards this past Friday, Clark also revealed she was hoping Woodley would get the win in his upcoming boxing rematch with Jake Paul.

“I think he has all the ability to beat Jake Paul, and I would love to see him get that win,” she told us.

As for what “Jessy-Jess” is looking forward to in 2022, “hopefully more than one fight a year, honestly. I’m going to keep annoying [UFC matchmaker] Mick Maynard until he gives me more fights. That’s all I want. I just want to fight.”

Clark (11-6, 1NC) has fought just once a year for the past three years. She currently sits on a two-fight win streak, having most recently defeated Joselyne Edwards this past October.

We also took a moment to touch on Clark’s nickname, Jessy Jess, which tends to get used more than her given name. “Everyone calls me Jessy-Jess. I like when people call me Jessica, but usually only my friends and family do,” Clark said. “So I feel like if someone yells out my name, they’re like ‘Jessica!’ then I must automatically know you, right? Because usually fans just call me Jessy-Jess. But I’m happy with anything.”

Marvin Vettori

Previously known mainly as a hot-head who refused to accept his losses to Israel Adesanya, Marvin Vettori’s image underwent something of a makeover ahead of UFC Vegas 41. By loudly proclaiming he’d take the fight with Paulo Costa at any weight, then backing up those words as the fight moved first to a 195lb catchweight, then to 205lbs, Vettori picked up a win both in and outside of the octagon.

Since his opponent was also a former middleweight title challenger, and given it’s clear Vettori can make 185, there’s no reason not to count this win as anything but extremely significant. “The Italian Dream” has now appeared in four straight main events, and won three of them. His only losses in years have come to Adesanya.

That, however, is the problem. A third fight against Izzy is a hard sell, even coming off a win over Costa. Vettori will need at least a few more before he gets another shot at gold, unless Robert Whittaker topples “The Last Stylebender” in a fight expected early next year.

With Vettori ranked #5, coming off a win over Costa and with Whittaker-Izzy and Jared Cannonier-Derek Brunson set, there’s only one play for the Italian. Sean Strickland was supposed to face Luke Rockhold at UFC 268 in just two week’s time. Rockhold was forced out due to a herniated disc. Vettori probably can’t make the date, but pair him up with Strickland and push it back to an amicable time frame.

Jessica-Rose Clark

After a year on the shelf due to an ACL injury, Jessica-Rose Clark returned to action at UFC Vegas 41 and secured a decision win over Joselyne Edwards. The fight wasn’t a thriller, but it gives Clark two straight wins in the UFC women’s bantamweight division. Clark is now 2-1 there overall, and Jessy Jess is a popular figure in a thin weight class.

That, however, is no reason to rush her development. Building her back up slowly after a significant injury is the right play. Stephanie Egger is coming off a recent win, and the timing works. Book it, and if Clark puts on a strong showing, then give her a step up and see if she can make a run to the top.

Alex Caceres

There was a time where it felt like Alex Caceres would never live up to his true potential in the UFC. Suddenly, that feels like a distant memory, as “Bruce Leeroy” is sitting on a five-fight win streak, with submission finishes in two of his last three bouts.

Caceres’ recent run has been remarkable. He’s looked comfortable. But we’re going to go a little left field on this one. Doo-Ho Choi, like Caceres, had some early hype, starting his UFC run strong. He’s since fallen on hard times, losing three straight, including the 2016 ESPN Fight of the Year against Cub Swanson. On opposite trajectories, Choi either gets back on track against a fighter with a full head of steam, or Caceres earns a win over someone who still has considerable name value.

Francisco Trinaldo

At 43, Francisco Trinaldo is one of the UFC’s winningest “old guys,” and he picked up a spit decision victory against Dwight Grant over the weekend. Now 4-1 in his last five, going back to his lightweight days, it’s time to see if the veteran will sink or swim at welterweight.

Max Griffin sits on a three-fight win streak, and is always a game opponent. Throw them together for a fun fight.

Nicolae Negumereanu

While his win came with a bit of controversy due to strikes to the back of the head, Nicolae Negumereanu earned his second straight victory inside the octagon against Ike Villanueva at UFC Vegas 41.

Like Negumereanu, Tafon Nchukwi is 2-1 in the promotion, coming off a win, and last competed back in September. This one doesn’t go the distance.

After over a year on the sidelines due to an ACL injury and subsequent surgery, Jessica-Rose Clark returned to the UFC octagon on Saturday.

In a main card bout at UFC Vegas 41, Clark was paired up with Joselyn Edwards. While Clark was coming off a TKO win over Sara Alpar back in September 2020, Edwards was hoping to bounce back from a loss to Karol Rosa.

Jessica-Rose kicked off the fight by immediately taking the action to the mat and ending up in full guard. Clark landed a couple of strikes but not much; referee Keith Peterson soon decided to stand the fight up to the feet. Mere seconds after the stand-up, Clark went for the takedown again and briefly secured it before Edwards reversed position and ended up in the clinch. Edwards landed a few elbows in the clinch before breaking off with a combination. However, the round came to a close with Clark on top, after another takedown.

The two bantamweights predictably ended up in the clinch a few seconds into the second round. After a valiant effort from Edwards, she was taken down once again. Clark passed to half-guard and eventually moved to mount. Clark didn’t do much in the way of damage, eventually opening up with a few solid elbows. However, right afterward she was kicked off to end the last few seconds of the round on the feet.

Edwards landed a nice combination to start the third round but was once again taken to the ground following a quick takedown. Clark landed a few short shots as she moved to half-guard, but once again neglected to do much in the way of offense. Edwards looked like a fish out of water, as she tried to land some elbows off of her back but nothing was having any effect. Edwards worked her way up to the feet for a moment but was once again tripped down to her back. Clark once again ended the round on top, securing her victory.

The popular Australian bantamweight has been on the shelf for some time, having last fought in September 2020. Though she won that battle, securing a TKO of Sarah Alpar, she was a casualty of war, tearing her ACL in the process.

“It almost doesn’t feel real. This is also a super-long camp, so it just felt like it was the Never-Ending Story, it’s just been an eternal camp,” Clark (10-6, 1NC) said ahead of her return at UFC Vegas 41 this weekend, where she’ll face Joselyne Edwards. “I think going through rehab then jumping straight into a fight camp just made it feel like it’s been 12 months of getting ready, because I had to relearn a lot of stuff.”

Clark, unquestionably, is excited to be back, and excited to be on the main card at UFC Vegas 41. “I feel if I’d been on the main card last time, I would have gotten a bonus. But hopefully this time.”

As much as the road to recovery was a long one, Clark revealed that for her, it was easier than anticipated. “95% of the people I talked to were like ‘yeah it was terrible, recovery was terrible, I was bed-ridden for weeks,'” she explained. In stark contrast, “I was in the gym three days later. I was off crutches almost immediately, I had pain killers for two days, and I didn’t even feel like I needed the painkillers, and that’s why I stopped.”

Rehab allowed her to do more than just heal he knee. “Going through that rehab gave me the opportunity to focus on things that I think I neglect when I’m fully physically able,” observed Clark. “Like a lot of mobility, balance, strength work. Just all these things that kind of get pushed to the wayside when you’re focusing on kickboxing, boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu.”

The goal, she added, was to come back “more athletic than I was before I had surgery, and that’s 100% how I feel.”

With all that said, fighting in fits and starts over the past few years has not been a fun experience. “I’m so f*cking frustrated dude. Just because, obviously, I spent most of 2019 on the shelf, and then I got injured again in 2020. I’m just having these year, year and a half long blocks and it sucks. I’m a full time athlete and I can’t even do my job full time.”

The latest setback, she added, “really highlighted how mortal I am within this sport. How quickly my job could be taken away from me, based on someone else’s actions, not even necessarily anything I do myself.” One she realized that her whole life could be taken away in an instant, Clark continued, “it really allowed me to start working on things in the background, and things I can do once I finish from fighting.”

“I have long-term goals now that maybe I didn’t have before this injury.”
