After winning his way into the UFC care of the Contender Series last year, featherweight Collin Anglin had dropped his debut to highly touted prospect Melsik Baghdasaryan.

For his sophomore effort, he was paired up against another promising up-and-comer in Sean Woodson, part of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 42 preliminary card.

A touch of gloves from the pair of featherweights started the fight; a 1-2 from Woodson landed, and Anglin rushed him, throwing a kick. A front kick and calf kick from the towering Woodson landed, and Anglin hit home with a hook in response.

Both men exchanged combos. About midway through the round, Anglin shot for a takedown, but Woodson defended. Anglin kept throwing wild punches, but nothing landed. Woodson kept chopping Anglin down. Another 1-2 from Woodson was followed by a body shot, and Anglin covered up. Woodson landed another body shot that hurt Anglin; he then threw yet another one that dropped Anglin, which forced Herb Dean to jump in.

Just slick body work from Woodson.

Sean Woodson picked up his first UFC finish in the fight, and is now riding a two-fight win streak. Anglin has now dropped two straight, both by way of finish. Anglin will most likely be fighting for his job in the promotion when he next steps into the octagon.

A pair of Dana White Contender Series featherweights will throw down at a UFC Fight Night in November.

MMA Junkie was first to report the news that Sean Woodson will fight Colin Anglin on November 13 at the yet-to-be-announced event. Both fighters would confirm the news on social media.

Woodson (8-1) recently bounced back after suffering his first professional loss to Julian Erosa in 2020. In June, he defeated Youssef Zalal via unanimous decision. The Sniper is 2-1 in the UFC so far.

Colin Anglin (8-2) will be looking for his first UFC win when he enters the octagon for the second time. He was finished via TKO in his promotional debut against Melsik Baghdasaryan in July. The loss snapped a seven-fight win streak. Anglin won his UFC contract on season four of Dana White’s Contender Series when he defeated Muhammadjon Naimov via unanimous decision.

No location, venue, or broadcast plan has been announced for the November 20 event, but promotion President Dana White said that all Fight Nights will be staying at the Apex in Las Vegas, NV. Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez are expected to headline.

So far, the November 13 card features the following match-ups:

Max Holloway vs. Yair Rodríguez

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Philipe Lins

Jessica Eye vs. Andrea Lee

Lando Vannata vs. Tucker Lutz

UFC Vegas 33 was a weird event before it even got kicking. From having half a dozen different co-main events to having a fight fall off and then back on the card – it was hard to keep track of everything. However, now that all the dust has settled, we’ll look at those on the final version of the main card that didn’t come away with wins.

Uriah Hall

It was a tough night for Uriah Hall. Whether the criticism of him not being there mentally or not has any merit, he seemed to not be able to get any offense going against Sean Strickland, which is an alarm in its own right. While he has wins over high profile opponents in Weidman and Silva, each of those comes with its own caveat (broken leg and past his prime respectively). Although he may not need to face somebody completely out of the top 15, I do think someone right at that edge is likely the answer. Andre Muniz is unbooked at the moment and could be a very bizarre styles clash for Hall. He beat grappling-heavy Antonio Carlos Junior – can he take out another jiu jitsu ace?

Uriah Hall’s Next Fight: Andre Muniz

Gloria De Paula

The quick knockout loss at UFC Vegas 33 was the second in as many fights for De Paula. In many cases, that’s enough to be shown the door in the UFC. However, I think she’s looked good enough to be afforded another chance. She was having success both against Buys and Jinh Yu Frey on the feet. If she can keep it there long enough, she’s exciting to keep around for another chance at that elusive first win. So let’s pair her with Na Liang, who really likes to grapple. If De Paula can keep it standing, it shows that she’s made gains in the takedown defense and earns her spot in the UFC.

Gloria De Paula Next Fights: Na Liang

Niklas Stolze

Stolze is another fighter who dropped to 0-2 at UFC Vegas 33. It didn’t happen in ideal fashion for the German either, getting KOed early by Jared Gooden. To continue the similarities to De Paula, he’s also a fun striker to watch and would be worth giving another shot in there. Also like De Paula, I’d like to see him fight someone with a grappling base – it would let us see if he can defend the takedown attempts while giving him a place he’d clearly be successful. Jordan Williams checks all those boxes and would be my pick for Stolze.

Niklas Stolze’s Next Fight: Jordan Williams

Collin Anglin

It’s hard to book someone who came in and lost his debut after looking good on Contender Series. He also lost quick and in pretty devastating fashion. For his second try, I say give him someone else trying to rebound in the same way. TJ Laramie won on the Contender Series and looked great doing it. Then he dropped his second fight to Darrick Minner in less than a minute. Let’s get one of those two on the board.

Collin Anglin’s Next Fight: TJ Laramie

Bryan Barberena

A tough loss for “Bam Bam” in his first fight since a brutal injury pulled him from a fight with Daniel Rodriguez. He looked great at times, but ultimately the takedowns of Jason Witt led him to a majority decision loss. I think it’s far from the last chapter for him though. Despite not being on the best run, Barberena is never in a boring fight. I say get him an opponent that lets him showcase how fun he is. At welterweight, that usually means a booking with Niko Price, Michel Pereira, or Mike Perry. Perry has been on a rougher stretch than the other two, so he is my pick for Barberena.

Bryan Barberena’s Next Fight: Mike Perry

On what was quickly becoming a card ravaged by bout cancellations (the event lost a full three fights between Friday morning and Saturday afternoon), Melsik Baghdasaryan vs. Collin Anglin wound up getting bumped all the way up to the main card.

Both fighters entered the night as UFC newcomers. Both had won their way into the promotion as part of Dana White’s Contender Series. One man was going to achieve the next step in his martial arts journey: a first UFC win.

Anglin was looking to cut off Baghdasaryan and make him work in close quarters. Instead, he ate a kick to the leg, one to the head, and then one to the body. The quickness of Baghdasaryan was clearly a huge advantage for him early on. Anglin managed to work him into the clinch a few times a landed glancing knees. The kicks to the body did damage to Anglin and he shot a takedown. After gripping Baghdasaryan’s knees for a brief moment, it got back to the feet. With 30 seconds left Baghdasaryan landed two massive left hands back to back and tried to pour it on Anglin for the finish. He landed some awkward standing hammer fists, but Anglin survived for the end of the round.

A much slower pace started the second round as Baghdasaryan seemed to be catching a breath and Anglin tried to find his range. Then Baghdasaryan started landing big hands. He followed it up with a big left head kick and it dropped Anglin. He came in to land some follow up shots, but Mark Smith had already seen enough.

After the fight, Baghdasaryan said that his nickname was “The Gun,” and he had plenty of guns in his arsenal, the head kick being just one. He also said he didn’t feel like himself in the fight, hinting at being a little tired, not himself. It’ll be interesting to see what a focused Melsik Baghdasaryan looks like, because he was extremely impressive in his debut.

Anglin (8-1) won a contract on season four of Dana White’s Contender Series when he defeated Muhammadjon Naimov via unanimous decision. He was supposed to make his UFC debut in February at UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov against Seung Woo Choi but withdrew from the fight. Anglin is riding a seven-fight win streak, with four finishes among the wins.

Baghdasaryan (5-1) also competed on season four of Dana White’s Contender Series against Team Longo’s Dennis Buzukja. He would win a unanimous decision but did not earn a UFC contract.

Week seven of this year’s Dana White’s Contender Series was definitely one to keep an eye on. And although there were plenty of reasons, one above all else stood out: a women’s featherweight fight, featuring Team USA boxing champ Danyelle Wolf, making the jump to MMA for the first time.

Taking on the undefeated Taneisha Tennant, Wolf was in the first MMA fight of her career, after 16 women declined to fight her following her decision to transition to the sport. An 0-0 fighter appearing on the show is unprecedented, but fans always love a boxing vs. MMA rivalry, so if for no other reason, the fight would be one to tune in for.

There were plenty of other reasons to watch, however. Jordan Williams was getting his third look on the show, taking on Black House MMA’s Gregory Rodrigues, a dangerous black belt in BJJ. Michael Lombardo was getting a second chance, opposite Korey Kuppe. And Dinis Paiva, who nearly left the sport early in his career after a rough start as a pro, was paired up with Kyle Driscoll.

As always, DWCS kicks off at 8PM ET, live on ESPN+ (in the U.S.) and UFC Fight Pass. Check back for updates throughout the evening.

Opening up the DWCS card on Tuesday, Dinis Paiva flashed his right hand, resulting in a brief knockdown of Kyle Driscoll. However, Driscoll immediately recovered, pursued a takedown, and while Paiva showed some impressive defense, it led to a lot of control time for Discoll, likely winning him the round. The second round saw Driscoll get his hands working as well, although a low blow stalled the action briefly. In the third, Paiva had his opponent backing up, but ate a punch that wobbled him, resulting in a brief takedown. But it was Paiva knocking down Driscoll again later in the round, a much more emphatic blow that in the opening frame.

Paiva soon had Driscoll down, in half guard, but that was giving Driscoll time to recover. In the final minute, it was Driscoll with the sweep, taking the back. Paiva would reclaim top position, Driscoll would scramble to the back, and the bell would sound.

In the second fight of the night, Boxer Danyelle Wolf not surprisingly got off to a good start with her hands in the opening round. She no doubt won that frame, but in the second, found herself in a bit of a brawl with Taneisha Tennant in the final minute or so. That likely stole the round for Tennant. In the third, a nasty eye poke by Wolf halted the action (Tennant had landed a poke of her own in the second). Once action resumed, Wolf, who had shown decent takedown defense, pulled guard for a tight guillotine attempt. She showed impressive strength, but Tennant would eventually pull free. The submission attempt likely won Wolf the round, however, with all three judges awarding her the fight.

Michael Lombardo and Korey Kuppe was something of a David vs. Goliath battle, given Kuppe’s towering height. But Lombardo got him down relatively early, only for Kuppe to put him in danger late in the round. Lombardo tried a similar approach in the second, and again in the third. A lot of elbows from the top, but they went the distance, and the pair were still heated after the final bell.

Muhammad Naimov vs. Collin Anglin was an all out war, with both men having their moments in the fight. By the third round, Anglin had the edge, rocking Naimov. Naimov shot for a takedown out of desperation, but couldn’t keep the fight down. This really was a slobberknocker, with the pair trading shot for shot by the end. Uppercuts, spinning back fists, standing elbows. A standing ovation from Dana White at the end of the fight bode well for the winner.

The final fight of the night was the first finish of the night. After a war between Anglin and Naimov, Williams vs. Rodrigues was more of a mercing. Williams trapped the BJJ ace against the cage, pressed forward and unloaded with a barrage of strikes, dropping Rodrigues and bringing about the finish.

This Tuesday’s edition of Dana White’s Contender Series is a very, very interesting affair. From a fighter who nearly hung up the gloves years ago in Dinis Paiva, to a BJJ ace in Gregory Rodrigues, to the debut of a Team USA boxer in Danyelle Wolf, there are plenty of fighters on this week’s DWCS card to keep an eye on.

There’s also a first, as Wolf, who featured in over 80 amateur boxing matches and was a multiple time amateur champ, will be making her MMA debut. Which means she’s an 0-0 fighter, a first for the show. Competing at featherweight no less.

Now on to the predictions and breakdown.

Who has the advantage?

Striking: Williams
Speed: Williams
Output/Volume: Williams
Knockout Power: Williams
Chin: Even
Kickboxing: Williams
Footwork: Williams
Wrestling: Rodrigues
Grappling: Rodrigues
Submissions: Rodrigues
Cardio: Williams

Prediction

Rodrigues is a BJJ ace as he is a black belt in jiu-jitsu. There is little to no doubt Rodrigues has the advantage in the grappling department, but whether he can take Williams down is the question. Williams hasn’t particularly shown he’s able to be out-wrestled, but Rodrigues is a big strong guy that could very well muscle him around.

This is one of those fights that could go two very different ways. It’s either going to be Rodrigues early, or we’ll see Williams (in his third DWCS showing) take over in the later rounds. I’m leaning toward Williams because he’s fought the better competition overall, and has been getting better with each fight. I like Rodrigues and I think he’s UFC level, but I don’t think he can neutralize Williams the entire fight.

We caught up with Rodrigues ahead of the fight — catch the full interview below.

Featherweight prospect Collin Anglin didn’t want to have any regrets ahead of his Contender Series fight September 15 against Muhammadjon Naimov. That’s why the 27-year-old moved from Michigan along with his fiancee to Colorado in order to train at the prestigious Factory-X gym.

“I’ve bartended (in East Lansing, Michigan) for about six years and that’s what I was doing leading up to the move,” Anglin told Cageside Press. “Since I’ve moved I’ve done nothing really but focus on training and luckily my fiance’s here with me, Mary. She works from home and is super supportive, so that helps out a lot.”

Anglin (7-1) heads into this fight on a six-fight win streak, with his last four victories coming by way of stoppage. The WXC veteran now gets to train with the likes of Youssef Zala, Brandon Royval, and Chris Gutierrez over at Factory X.

Naimov (5-0) has finished back-to-back opponents, including a second-round TKO victory over Josh Augustine at Titan FC 62 in July. The 26-year-old has gone the distance once in his career.

While his opponent boasts an impressive resume, Anglin believes he’s the better overall fighter.

“Well honestly I feel like I’m better than him everywhere,” Anglin explained. “I feel like I’m better than him on the feet and on the ground. It’s just like what I decide during the fight you know? Do I want to take him down? I do see a finish though, I don’t see it going the distance.”

Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series is confirmed as returning for a fourth season, not that there was ever any question. As an entry path into the UFC, the show has proven popular thus far. The fourth season will kick off in June or July, and interest should be high.

In this piece, we feature 25 prospects believed worthy of a spot on the Contender Series Season 4. Left out will be fighters that fought on the previous seasons, though some may return.

Hugo Cunha

Heavyweight | 25 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | 5-0 | 3 KO/TKO, 2 Submissions

Hugo Cunha doesn’t have a lot of experience in MMA but is a Brazilian National Team wrestler and a BJJ black belt. You will notice his level of competition has been poor as he’s fought three opponents with an 0-0 record. Cunha has still looked dominant thus far in his career and that’s with a 100% finish rate. From Brazil, the ‘Silverback’ has fought in Florida for Titan FC so fighting in the States increases his stock even more.

Renan Ferreira

Heavyweight | 30 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | 6-2 | Win Streak: 1 | 5 KO/TKO, 1 Submission

Renan Ferreira’s loss early on in his career to Vinicius Moreira doesn’t look so good today. That was early in his career though and the truth is his ceiling is much higher. Like Cunha, Ferreira has recently fought in the U.S., with that bout being for top promotion LFA. He won his last fight against Jared Vanderaa and before that was on his way to probably beating Brett Martin only to be DQ’d due to punches to the back on the head. “Problema” is a giant standing at 6’10” who has a perfect finishing rate all inside two rounds. All those finishes have come by TKO mostly by ground-and-pound. On the feet, he does hit hard, has heavy leg kicks, and a good jab. Ferreira is a problem on the mat being such a big guy, and he does not let up with his heavy ground strikes.

Bruno Miranda

Lightweight | 29 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | 13-3 | Win Streak: 4 | 8 KO/TKOs, 2 Submissions

Brazil’s Bruno Miranda lives in Phuket, Thailand as he trains out of Tiger Muay Thai with the likes of many top UFC athletes. Miranda has extensive experience in Muay Thai and it has shown throughout his MMA career. He’s a staple of South Korean promotion Road FC fighting for them nine times. He isn’t locked down in contract-wise and he has a fighting style that should draw the UFC in.

Al Matavao

Light heavyweight | 26 | Nu’uuli, Alaska | 8-2 | Win Streak: 4 | 5 KO/TKOs, 1 Submission

Alaska is a state that lacks higher level fighters but Al Matavao is someone that has potential. In his most recent fight he scored a 16-second knockout. With that alone it’s almost certain he will land on the Contender Series. His last loss was to Jake Heun but since then he has won his next four fights. Matavao is fun to watch and has a style that always produces exciting fights.

Jake Hadley

Flyweight | 23 | Birmingham, England | 5-0 | Win Streak: 7 | 1 KO/TKOs, 3 Submissions

Jake Hadley is only 5-0 as a pro but in his amateur career, he was successful and was a 4x amateur British flyweight champion. When Hadley was only 3-0 as a pro he fought a top prospect in Nkazimulo Zulu. Hadley beat him for the EFC Worldwide Flyweight Championship. In his latest fight, he beat a very good Blaine O’Driscoll in his Bellator debut. He could very well go straight to the UFC and there would be no complaints.

Nikolas Motta

Lightweight | 26 | Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, Brazil | 11-3 | Win Streak: 2 | 8 KO/TKOs

In 2015, Nikolas Motta competed on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil Season 4 and lost to the eventual winner, Glaico França. Since then, Motta is 5-2 with both losses to good fighters. Motta has a win over current UFC fighter Joe Solecki. Also, a win over Cesar Balmaceda who was on our list last year. From Brazil, he lives in the United States and is the current CFFC lightweight champion.

Christien Savoie

Welterweight | 27 | New Brunswick, Canada | 8-0 | Win Streak: 11 | 5 KO/TKOs

Christien Savoie has competed at both middleweight and welterweight. Elite 1 MMA is a promotion out of Canada and Savoie has won two titles for them at both of those weight classes. Last summer, Savoie was targeted for the Contender Series, which unfortunately didn’t pan out — in fact it hasn’t the past two seasons. This could be the year. Savoie is mainly a grinder who will push the pace in close quarters. He wants to take the fight to the mat where his ground and pound is excellent landing at a solid rate with good shots from a short amount of distance.

Casey O’Neill

Strawweight | 22 | Queensland, Australia | 4-0 | Win Streak: 9 | 1 Submission

When it comes to young up-and-comers, Casey O’Neill is one of the best. From Scottland, O’Neill has fought her entire pro and amateur career in Australia. She’s the current Eternal MMA Strawweight Championship. She even moved up to 125 in her latest fight because it’s so hard for her to find strawweights willing to fight her. O’Neill also fights out of an excellent camp in Tiger Muay Thai.

Hailey Cowan

Flyweight | 27 | Waco, Texas, US | 5-1 | Win Streak: 5 | 2 KO TKOs, 1 Submission

Hailey Cowan has an extensive background in gymnastics and was very accomplished at Baylor University. She won a few tumbling national titles and is a two-time All-American. After coming up short in her pro-MMA debut, she then went on to win her next five fights looking impressive in the process. She’s a staple of top regional promotion LFA who always does a great job molding fighters.

Anthony Ivy

Welterweight | 29 | San Antonio, Texas, US | 8-2 | Win Streak: 4 | 5 KO TKOs, 3 Submission

Anthony Ivy is on a nice five-fight win streak currently and is the Fury FC and the WXC welterweight champion. Ivy has some good qualities on the feet with good clinch work and an explosive head kick. He’s primarily wrestler who chains his takedowns together well to go along with good timing, setups, and executions. In the grappling realm, he has perfect control showing superb ability to get dominant positions. His work ethic and cardio set him apart from other welterweight prospects.

John Gotti III

Welterweight | 27 | Oyster Bay, New York, US | 5-0 | Win Streak: 9 | 4 KO TKOs

John Gotti III is best known as the grandson of the infamous John Gotti, the Italian-American gangster known as the “Teflon Don.” John Gotti the third is going down a different path, pursuing a career in MMA, and has looked really good so far. He’s a knockout artist who recently went the distance for the first time. That’s a plus, for him to get that in early in his career. He has a style Dana White would want on the Contender Series.

Jose Johnson

Bantamweight | 24 | Copperas Cove, Texas, US | 11-5 | Win Streak: 5 | 7 KO TKOs, 1 Submission

Jose Johnson, being only 24, has an amazing amount of experience. Not only is he 11-5 as a pro but he has an extensive amateur career going 68-12. At a point in his pro career, Jose was 5-4 but since late 2018 he’s looked much improved. He’s the current Warrior Xtreme Cagefighting bantamweight champ and recently fought for the top UFC feeder league LFA. Johnson has looked stellar as of late. He is now on a five-fight win streak, all finishes in the first round.

Emillio Trevino

Light-heavyweight | 24 | Boise, Idaho, US | 5-0 | Win Streak: 6 | 2 KO TKOs, 1 Submission

Emilio Trevino is still a bit unknown due to only fighting pro for three years, and his lack of a busy schedule. Without much experience, he’s still fought for both LFA and Bellator MMA. Trevino fights out of a karate stance and is a fighter who fights behind his kicks. He actively switches stances and throws from different angles as well. He’s still green but has the toolset to go far.
