Following two strong cards from the UFC and PFL, RIZIN Fighting Federation’s RIZIN Landmark 13 got underway, Sunday local time in Japan, or late Saturday for many western fight fans.

A stacked card saw the promotion’s featherweight and bantamweight titles on the line. Danny Sabatello was putting his 135lb title on the line in the night’s co-main event, against Japanese challenger Joji Goto. The former Bellator star earned a split decision in December to dethrone Naoki Inoue, and is 3-0-1 in his last four bouts.

In the main event, undefeated 17-0 featherweight champion Razhabali Shaidulloev looked to make his third title defense against Yuta Kubo.

Making his promotional debut at RIZIN Landmark 13 was Ireland’s James Gallagher, looking for his fourteenth professional win. Fellow Bellator alum and former lightweight champ in that promotion, Patricky Pitbull, also returned. At 40, he was looking to snap a four-fight skid.

For those staying up late (or getting up early) following UFC Des Moines, there was another stacked fight card awaiting in RIZIN Otoko Matsuri.

The latest offering from RIZIN Fighting Federation took place at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, with a featherweight title fight headlining the show. In addition, the opening round of the RIZIN 2025 Heavyweight World Grand Prix kicked off, and a number of familiar names including John Dodson and Danny Sabatello were also in action.

In the main event, featherweight champion Kleber Koike Erbst looked to defend his RIZIN title against the undefeated Razhabali Shaidulloev of Kyrgyzstan. A former KSW champ, Koike was on his second stint as the RIZIN featherweight champion.

Promotional mainstays Mikuru Asakura and Chihiro Suzuki faced off in the evening’s co-main event, while Daniel James, a Bellator and PFL alum, took on Marek Samociuk in the aforementioned heavyweight grand prix. James had missed weight for the fight, but RIZIN dropped their “no contest” rule that traditionally saw fighters missing weight see wins turned to no contests. That allowed the grand prix to move forward, though James would start the bout with a red card and point deduction.

Also featured on the card, Canadian flyweight Tony Laramie brought an eight-fight win streak into his showdown with Yuki Ito. UFC and Bellator veteran Spike Carlyle, meanwhile, had missed weight for a fight with Takeshi Izumi. He would start the fight with a red card, costing him a point, and should he win, the bout would be ruled a No Contest.

RIZIN Fighting Federation closed out 2024 in a big way on New Year’s Eve.

Hosting a 22-fight card at the Saitama Super Arena entitled RIZIN Decade (a nod to the promotion’s 10th anniversary), the Japanese fight promotion put on the sort of New Year’s party only they could – with explosive action, wild actics, and high-stakes title fights all featured.

The antics included a ref being struck multiple times during the Rukiya Anpo boxing match, which saw him earn a clear unanimous decision over Sina Karimian, who held a serious size advantage. Chaos erupted late in the fight when Karimian fired off a spinning back fist; moments later, the ref was struck repeatedly (though accidentally), leading to security entering the ring – though the fight was allowed to continue shortly after.

What was going on here?!? A spinning back fist, and multiple blows landed on the ref… CHAOS!! #RIZIN_Decade (Footage courtesy of RIZIN FF/RIZIN.tv) pic.twitter.com/Sfo0m0CuPE

The night’s first title fight saw lightweight gold on the line when Roberto Satoshi Souza faced off with former featherweight champ Vugar Karamov. The tone was set early with a takedown for Souza roughly 90 seconds in; that had Karamov scrambling but unable to escape back to his feet. Souza passed into side control, looking to create space, but Karamov then found his escape route and scrambled out.

After a bit of trading, and some back-and-forth grappling along the ropes, the next takedown actually came care of Karamov, who landed on top of the dangerous submission expert. Souza would throw up his legs, looking for a triangle, late in the round after a big punch from Karamov, and though it looked as if Vugar might make it out of the round, he was quickly forced to tap! The victory marked Souza’s fourth defense of the RIZIN lightweight title, which the Brazilian has held since its inception.

Go to the ground with Roberto Satoshi Souza at your own peril. He retains his lightweight title with yet another submission win, this time of former featherweight champ Vugar Karamov. #RIZIN_Decade (Footage courtesy of RIZIN FF/RIZIN.tv) pic.twitter.com/nkueB3RtPu

Kyoji Horiguchi also retained his flyweight title in the RIZIN Decade co-main event. In a fight that was not without adversity for the champ, Horiguchi was able to impose his will on the ground, while holding his own enough on the feet to earn a unanimous decision win. A former bantamweight champ in both Bellator MMA and RIZIN, Horiguchi remains one of the most formidable fighters in the lighter weight classes, globally.

Capping off the night at RIZIN Decade, Kleber Koike faced Chihiro Suzuki in a rematch of a fight that saw him stripped of his featherweight title for missing weight. Suzuki had, in the interim, claimed gold himself, upping the stakes for this second encounter. However despite doing significant damage, opening up a cut on the challenger in the third round that seemed to spurt blood at times, Suzuki could not do enough to retain. All too often, he found himself caught in dangerous submission attempts, and while the bout went the distance, all three judges awarded it to Koike.

Taisei Sakuraba, son of PRIDE legend and UFC Hall of Fame member Kazushi Sakuraba, made his MMA debut at RIZIN Decade on New Year’s Eve.

It couldn’t have gone any better.

The 26-year old second generation star was making the walk for first time at RIZIN’s biggest show of the year, not to mention its 10-year anniversary. And while your average debuting fighter might take on a fellow newcomer, or someone with just a handful of fights, Sakuraba (Jr) jumped straight into the deep end, facing 40+ fight veteran and RIZIN Fighting Federation mainstay Yusuke Yachi.

Yachi, with roughly 15 years experience as a pro, entered the night at 27-14. His most recent outing, back in September, saw him earn a unanimous decision victory over the dangerous Sho Patrick Usami.

Taisei Sakuraba wasted no time in putting an end to Yachi’s night in Saitama. Fighting at the same famed Saitama Super Arena his father had once stalked, Sakuraba dropped Yachi off a caught kick, then piled on with ground n’ pound, at least a couple of blows connecting flush. While there might be a bit of talk of a quick stoppage, Yachi was certainly taking damage, and that’s on the ref, not Sakuraba, who picks up the win in his debut in the biggest way possible. The entire fight took a grand total of 26 seconds, the RIZIN Decade broadcast later announced.

Following the victory, Taisei Sakuraba vowed to continue training and improving – and who can blame him, with the very sizeable shoes he has to fill. Meanwhile, he joins the likes of Royce and Khonry Gracie, and Antonio and A.J. McKee, as a second generation fighter in MMA.
