Cameron Smotherman doesn’t feel he cut a lot of weight for his bantamweight fight with Ricky Turcios at UFC 324— and is baffled as to why he fainted at the event’s official weigh-in in Las Vegas on Friday.
Smotherman faceplanted after stepping off the scale and walking across the stage after successfully weighing in for the bout, with media outlets including Cageside Press witnessing the disturbing scene.
Now, in his first statement since the incident, Smotherman has revealed that he had an easy weight cut, and is determined to get to the bottom of what happened.
“I’m completely okay. I’m good. I’m not entirely sure what happened. I see a lot of people online saying, ‘Oh, it was a crazy weight cut,’ stuff like that. I genuinely didn’t cut very much weight for this fight,” Smotherman said in a video statement posted on social media. “I came in pretty low, but even [over] the course of this week, I haven’t cut much weight.”
“I’m not entirely sure what happened, and I have some more tests and stuff to take in the coming weeks to get to the bottom of it,” he continued. “But to all the people saying I must have done a crazy cut or something like that— I cut very, very little weight. I’m not sure what happened.”
Smotherman finished by saying “I appreciate the concern. I’m completely okay, and hopefully I’ll be back soon. I apologize to my opponent.”
Smotherman (12-6) is 1-2 under the UFC banner and had been looking to snap a two-fight skid against TUF winner Turcios.
