Song Yadong is set for the biggest fight of his career at UFC 324, as the surging bantamweight contender squares off with former champion Sean O’Malley in a matchup that could bring some clarity to the title picture.
Song (22-8-1) isn’t typically one to deal with much trash talk, but O’Malley drew attention during their most recent faceoff by wearing a face mask. The moment sparked backlash from some fans who viewed it as racist, though the former bantamweight champion insisted he meant no harm.
“I’m ok, but I think, don’t bring the racism in this sport. Just keep it sport. He already regret,” Song told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.
“He said he’s sorry. He was trying to get inside of my head, mind games, but I don’t care. I just focus on the fight. I don’t care. I just want to win the fight.”
O’Malley has said he expects to face UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan with a win at UFC 324. Song didn’t share the same level of certainty, but he also didn’t rule it out.
“This fight is most important. If I win this fight I might be the next title challenger,” he said.
“But I will take whatever UFC give me, but this fight is very important for now.”
