Lightweights Terrance McKinney and Chris Duncan were looking to make it a short night in their preliminary card bout at UFC 323.
Both men were known as finishers, with McKinney in particular never having gone the distance.
McKinney, having never seen the scorecards, came out hot, apparently owing the judges money and trying his darndest to avoid them. And he had Chris Duncan hurt early. Lefts, rights, high kicks, Duncan was down, but showed some true durability in surviving the onslaught.
Knees were doing real damage for McKinney as well, but Duncan then turned the tables. Hurting McKinney, he got the fight to the ground. There, McKinney covered up, and… covered up. And covered up. Duncan was landing some solid blows, but the ref let it continue.
McKinney, shockingly, made it back to his feet, Duncan still all over him. Punches were coming from behind, under the body and connecting as “The Problem” held McKinney’s head in place. And still, McKinney apparently was doing enough defensively in the ref’s eyes to continue.
McKinney would go back down, but his neck was fully exposed, and Duncan would take advantage. He locked up an Anaconda choke on a dazed McKinney, with Terrance soon tapping.

“Problem by name, problem by nature” noted Duncan following the frankly chaotic fight, noting that he was prepared for the furious start. While, it’s worth noting, giving props to McKinney as well.
Official Result: Chris Duncan def. Terrance McKinney by submission (Anaconda choke), Round 1, 2:30
