Tatsuro Taira Targets Finish Over Moreno To Lay Claim To Next Title Shot

Tatsuro Taira returns to the big stage at UFC 323 on Saturday night, stepping out of the UFC APEX and back into a packed arena atmosphere for the first time since 2023 as he prepares to meet former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno.

“This will be my second T-Mobile experience. Very happy to be back, very excited to be fighting in front of all the fans,” Taira told reporters through a translator on Wednesday.

“As long as it’s (the octagon) is big I don’t worry too much.”

Taira (17-1) welcomes the big-stage energy that comes with a former champion across the cage. The rising flyweight says this is exactly the matchup he’s been calling for.

“After last fight I wanted a top ranked (fighter). Hearing the name Brandon Moreno it was like the perfect opponent that I wanted. I think it will be the perfect match to determine the next title contender,” said Taira.

Taira sees Saturday night as more than just another bout as it’s an opportunity to elevate himself in a division finally gaining momentum. After watching fellow Japanese star Kyoji Horiguchi deliver a statement win earlier this year, he knows the bar has been set for what Japan expects on the big stage.

“Looking at Kyoji’s fight I think he showed a great performance, obviously that’s something I have to show this Saturday as well. Make sure I finish Moreno, which he’s never been finished, give him the first finish. That’s what I have to show,” he said.
