Ismael Bonfim returns to the Octagon this Saturday at UFC Vegas 111, eager to reclaim the momentum that once made him one of Brazil’s most promising lightweights. Standing in his way is Chris Padilla. With both men fighting to prove a point, this clash has all the makings of a high-stakes battle for relevance in the stacked 155-pound division.
Bonfim (20-5) will be on the undercard with his brother, Gabriel, headlining the event. The Bonfim brothers’ bond extends far beyond blood, it’s the foundation of their rise in mixed martial arts. Training together daily in their new gym, Bonfim Brothers, Ismael says the partnership pushes both of them to reach new levels.
“I think we help each other a lot and the work that we put in involves a lot of one helping the other as well,” Bonfim told reporters through a translator on Wednesday.
“Some of the athletes that we brought in at our new team, Bonfim Brothers, we have high-level athletes that help us evolve and give us the highest level of training. Gabriel is a key part of that.”
For Ismael Bonfim, fighting alongside his brother isn’t just convenient, it’s natural. Sharing every aspect of their daily grind, from the gym to home life, has created a rhythm that fuels both brothers’ success.
“It makes all the sense in the world, right? We live together, we train together, we work together. Everything is there. There’s also an inspiration to one being here at the same time as the other, one feeds off of the other and it helps a lot,” he said.
Bonfim didn’t hold back when asked about recent betting scandals involving fighters fixing fights to hit on bets. The Brazilian lightweight condemned the behavior, calling it a disgrace to the sport and a betrayal of everything MMA stands for.
“Yes it’s definitely a problem. You talk about an athlete, you talk about honor, you talk about loyalty, you talk about commitment. It’s a lot of work that’s being put in here. I think that when people do like that they have no shame. They just don’t have any respect,” he said.
“No one has ever offered me this, but I will be one of the people to say no and to also rat on them. The UFC is right to have done what they did, and you need to look into it.”
