Yana Santos Calls for Harsher Penalties After Chiasson Weight Miss

Yana Santos picked up a much-needed win at UFC 320, but the victory came with frustration after opponent Macy Chiasson missed weight ahead of their bout, a lapse Santos says still doesn’t sit right with her.

Santos (17-8) was particularly disappointed that no one from Chiasson’s team came forward to apologize for the weight miss. An apology she still feels is owed.

“No single person come to me and say sorry,” Santos told reporters including Cageside Press at her post-fight scrum.

“No one asked me if I want to fight or not. After fight I came to her and say that you should at least say sorry.”

Chiasson appeared unconcerned about offering an apology, noting that Santos had already received 25% of her purse as a penalty for the weight miss. Still, Santos made it clear the gesture, not the money, was what mattered to her.

“She told me ‘you got paid for this’. Why complain? I (don’t) fight for money. It’s nice to get paid, but I (don’t) fight for money,” she said.

“I feel like UFC not give enough punishment for fighter who missed weight. I think it’s the biggest reason why a lot of people miss weight.”

Santos suggested that the fine for missing weight should be increased to 50% to better motivate fighters to stay disciplined on the scale.

UFC 320 marked the first time Santos, who is married to former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Thiago Santos, was able to bring her children to one of her fights. And it seems she may already have a future fighter in the family.

Her three-year-old daughter is already telling her parents that she wants to fight.

“She’s (interested) in fighting. She always says that ‘I want to fight too’. She likes to put gloves (on) and punch bag,” she told Cageside Press.

“I want to. Let’s go fight! I’m so happy that I (was able) to bring my kids and they (were) there. I want to be (a) good example to my son and to my daughter.”
