Oliveira (35-11) is coming off a tough loss in his bid to regain the lightweight belt losing to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 in June. Up to that point Oliveira hadn’t fought since last November where he took a decision victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 309.
The #4 ranked lightweight is clearly looking for one more run to a title taking on the #10 ranked Fiziev in Brazil. Oliveira hasn’t fought in his home country in 5 years. That night he beat Kevin Lee via guillotine choke in the third round.
Fiziev (13-4) is riding the momentum of a victory over Ignacio Bahamondes at UFC Baku in June. The win snapped a 3-fight losing skid by Azerbaijani fighter in fights with Justin Gaethje and Mateusz Gamrot.
A victory over the former champion would launch Fiziev in the top 5 and right into the title picture at 155. With Topuria now the king of the division it’s primed for fresh matchups and new title challengers at lightweight.
UFC Rio takes place on Oct. 11 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The card, as of now, looks as follows:
