UFC lightweight Chris Duncan isn’t someone who dreads fighting at the UFC APEX as he gets set to face Mateusz Rebecki in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 108 on Saturday night.
Duncan (13-2) actually has a soft spot for the warehouse-turned-fight-venue. Fans and some fighters might not like it, but it’s a reminder of how he got his start in the UFC.
“I earned my UFC contract (here). I remember when I was a young kid thinking about trying to get into the UFC. I dreamt about being in the UFC. I used to blow out candles, used to put coins in wishing wells, to try and get to the UFC. That’s a dream I’ve completed now,” Duncan told reporters on Wednesday.
“I have changed my goals and admirations. Not many people can say that they’ve managed to get their dream so I’m in a very fortunate position. Great to be back.”
In Rebecki he has a pressure fighter who walks ahead. Duncan knows what to expect from Rebecki on Saturday night.
“We all know he comes forward. He’s a bit of a brawler. I think he’s going to wrestle me a little bit to be honest. Takes no genius to know he’s going to come forward with some heat. So we just need make sure we’re not getting caught in stupid places. He’s a great opponent to have in front of me,” he said.
So what was the secret to getting into the UFC? Was it the wishing well or perhaps the candles?
“This bad boy here,” Duncan said raising his fist.
“That got me to the UFC.”
