Loopy Godinez Did Full UFC Mexico City Training Camp in Canada

Mexican-Canadian Loopy Godinez (or Lupita, but Loopy has clearly caught on) returns to action at UFC Mexico City, and expects the best Julia Polastri possible this Saturday night at the Arena CDMX.

“I feel amazing, I had a great training camp, and I feel ready to go this Saturday,” stated Godinez (12-5) during this week’s UFC Mexico City media day, before revealing some surprising news: her entire fight camp played out in her adopted home of Canada, despite having trained alongside Alexa Grasso at Lobo Gym in Guadalajara, Mexico.

“I did my full camp in Canada, and we made sure we covered all the bases. I came here a couple weeks early, and I felt great,” revealed Godinez, asked about fighting at elevation in Mexico City, which sits at about 7,350 feet (2,240 meters). “I didn’t really feel the elevation. And that makes me think I had everything covered in my fight camp. It’s been really good.”

While Godinez still has the option of training at Lobo Gym, “I decided to go back to Canada just because it’s easier,” she added. “It was hard to go back and forth, back [again]. Maybe at the end of the year I’ll go there and train, stuff like that.”

Back in 2023, having won four straight fights, Godinez was being looked at as a potential title contender. Back-to-back losses to Virna Jandiroba and Mackenzie Dern have halted that progress for now, and in turn inspired Godinez to mix things up in training.

“This training camp, I changed a lot of stuff, and I feel I improved a lot. Losing, I take it as a big learning experience,” said Godinez. “That’s how I’m taking it.”

As far as the title picture, “I feel like a win this Saturday, that will kind of give me a ranked opponent,” Godinez added. “But honestly I’m just thinking about this Saturday, not really thinking ahead of myself or anything like that.”
