Last night, two extremely talented Bantamweight prospects squared off at Oktagon65. Jonas Mågård, former OktagonMMA Bantamweight Champion, and #1 contender welcomed Igor Severino to OktagonMMA.
Severino, who went viral for his UFC debut disqualification due to biting his opponent, looked to bounce back.
At the face-off, Jonas Mågård brought a toothbrush and told the Brazilian to brush his teeth, which caused security to separate the pair.
In the opening round, Severino and Mågård traded shots, with Severino landing the more significant shots, and Mågård landing three very well executed takedowns. Two of the three judges gave Severino the first round.
Mågård began landing heavy blows in the second round, putting the Brazillian on skates. The Danish bantamweight looked like he was about to put Severino out, but somehow he managed to survive until the bell. The round was unanimously given to Mågård. Two judges had the fight tied, and one had it in favor of Mågård
In the third and final round, Severino seemed to have cleared the cobwebs and put it on Mågård. The former UFC fighter landed 3 takedowns, but that didn’t amount to a huge amount of control time. Mågård needed to do more in the third round, as it was very close but didn’t push as hard, because he seemed to think he might have had the fight won.
The scorecards read 29-28 Severino, 29-28 Mågård and 29-28 Severino.
A split decision win for the 21-year-old Igor Severino. In the post-fight press conference, he stated that he wanted to fight for the title. Mågård brought up the idea of a 5-round rematch, for the vacant title, which would definetely have the fans excited.
Jack Cartwright, the #2 contender, who lost to Mågård earlier this year, declined title rematches with Mågård on two occasions. Should he get the title shot against Severino?
Official Result: Igor Severino def. Jonas Mågård via Split-Decision (29-28×2, 28-29)
