Oktagon 64: Marek Bartl Loves Bad Guy, Underdog Roles

Munchen, Germany — Welterweight Marek Bartl was one of the night’s big winners at Oktagon 64 in Munchen, Germany on Saturday, putting away Endrit Brajshori with a reverse triangle choke in the opening round.

The win makes it two straight for Bartl under the Oktagon banner, and bodes well for his next assignment, a grappling match on the books just a week after the fight.

“I feel really good. Everything goes good. From preparation to weight cutting to the fight,” Bartl (13-13) told Cageside Press following the fight.

Asked about the rather rare (in MMA at least) reverse (inverted) triangle finish, Bartl explained that “I train jiu-jitsu four or five times per week. So I train this sh*t every day. I feel comfortable in this position, and when I take my opponent to the ground and I feel here’s some space for this, I tried to catch it.”

Marek Bartl also told us that he relishes playing the bad guy. Especially when he wins the crowd over. “This is the thing that I love the most, when I go to the cage and the crowd hates me or screams my opponent’s name, and after the fight, everyone’s screaming my name.”

“I know I’m from Slovakia and fighting here in Germany, and he lives here in Germany, so I accept this. For me it doesn’t matter.” He likewise enjoys the underdog role. “Every time I’m the underdog, I enjoy it the most.”
