Ciryl Gane Sees Volkov Fight As #1 Contender Bout

Las Vegas – Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane faces Alexander Volkov at UFC 310 in a rematch that many felt was an odd booking.

Gane doesn’t feel the same.

“No that’s not a surprise. This fight makes sense. (He’s ranked) just above me so that’s completely normal,” Gane told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.

“In front of me there are (Jon) Jones, Tom (Aspinall), I don’t know what exactly is going to happen. So yeah this (fight) makes sense.”

Gane (12-2) has had a taste of gold before. He beat Derrick Lewis for the interim title at UFC 265 before dropping the belt at UFC 270 to Francis Ngannou. With the way things are in the heavyweight division, could this fight with Volkov be considered a #1 contender fight?

“Like a semi-final? Yeah a little bit yes of course,” he said.

‘Bon Gamin’ hasn’t fought since September of 2003, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been busy. He was seen at the Olympics in Paris carrying the torch for France.

“This mean a lot for me because my hype from MMA, and MMA is not Olympic sport,” he said.

“I touch this a little bit with some guys in the Judo. To be there and to have consideration for the Olympic games, even if I’m from MMA, was incredible sensation.”
