On a night with seven finishes – the best haul in a while for a Fight Night card – UFC Vegas 100 was capped off by welterweights Carolos Prates and Neil Magny.
Magny at 37 held multiple welterweight records, primarily most wins, and most fights in the division. Prates at 31 wasn’t a kid, but still in his prime and looking to make a name for himself in the weight class and the UFC as a whole.
Neil Magny wasted no time implementing his game plan on Saturday, grabbing a leg off a level change and forcing Prates to hop back to the fence. When they went to the ground, however, it was Carlos Prates getting on top, looking to land elbows and heavy punches. Still, Prates opted to back off, returning to his feet and allowing Magny back up. In the next clinch, Magny landed a right hand, then tried for a trip, though Prates stayed standing.
Magny was like a dog with a bone when it came to his takedown attempts, simply refusing to let go. But towards the end of the round, Prates rocked Magny with an elbow, leading to Magny dropping to his backside. And back on his feet, Magny was like a baby deer on skates, stumbling around the octagon until finally latching on to a leg once more. There was no takedown to be had, but it gained Magny some recovery time. Not enough, as it turned out, as Prates dropped Magny seconds later with a glancing blow that barely connected. Still, Magny went down, clipping Prates hip along the way, laying face down for a good minute and looking out of it while Carlos Prates was announced as the winner.
Official Result: Carlos Prates def. Neil Magny by KO, Round 1, 4:50
