Brazil’s Ketlen Souza, a former Invicta FC champ at flyweight, looked to notch her second straight victory in the UFC when she took on Yazmin Jauregui at UFC 306 on Saturday.
Otherwise known as Noche UFC, the card at The Sphere in Las Vegas was set to celebrate Mexico’s fighting heritage and independence. It would be Jauregui representing Mexico in the bout, looking for her fourth win in five fights under the UFC banner.
A foul-filled opening (and only) round saw two low blows landing in just a matter of minutes in Jauregui vs. Souza. With both women landing low once, the ref admonished them saying “no more” and noting they’d got one each — and moments later it would not matter. Souza dropped Jauregui with a left hook, flattening her then pouncing on a choke. She got hooks in, wrapped up the rear-naked choke and quickly ended the Mexican’s night, earning the upset win and putting a damper on Mexican spirits, with their fighters falling to 1-2 through three fights on the night.
Souza improved to 2-1 inside the octagon with the victory, her lone loss coming at flyweight. Following the win, the Brazilian wished those in attendance a happy Mexican Independence Day.
Official Result: Ketlen Souza def. Yazmin Jauregui by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 1, 3:02
