UFC APEX – Many fighters say they want some time off after a tough fight, but the allure of a short-notice scrap was too good for featherweight Steve Garcia who faces Kyle Nelson at UFC Vegas 97 on Saturday night.
“Might have been a week after the fight (victory over Seung Woo Choi in July),” Garcia told reporters about when he got the call for the Nelson fight.
“I was probably eating some pizza. Called me he’s like, ‘hey man Kyle Nelson is no longer fighting Calvin Kattar, would you want to step in?’. I’ve always kind of thought like me and him would probably cross paths at some point anyways.”
Garcia (16-5) thought about it while munching on a slice and figured, why not?
“I was like I’m in shape. Yeah let me talk to my coaches about it and see what they think. My fight was, not easy, but like I didn’t come out like really banged up. So I had that in my favor. My body just definitely goes through it during camp,” he said.
“My coaches wanted to make sure that I was good. I was like, ‘You know what man let’s just go for it. Let’s go for it.'”
