The traveling circus that is Jake Paul was in action on Saturday, July 20 fighting a consolation prize in Mike Perry, after another Mike, “Iron” Mike Tyson, was forced to push back a date with “The Problem Child.”
That Netflix showdown, a battle of age and experience versus youth and impetuousness, appealed to practically no one, but would still have been a big money maker. Then, Tyson, pushing 60, went and did what men his age do, and had an ulcer flareup. Perhaps a sign that a 20-something shouldn’t fight a man in his late 50s.
Paul, who has never met a lopsided fight he didn’t like, jumped from the decrepit (with apologies to Tyson, who looks to be in good shape and can still probably pummel anyone his age, non-fighters, and a good number of younger athletes) to the undersized, signing on to fight former welterweight Mike Perry in a cruiserweight affair.
Paul has been shouting into the wind in terms of promoting the fight, claiming that UFC President and CEO Dana White would give Perry a UFC contract should he beat the Youtuber. The reality is that Perry left the UFC to find greater success outside of it, making a return dubious at best.
As for Jake Paul, his list of wins includes Ben Askren (welterweight), Tyron Woodley (welterweight), Anderson Silva (middleweight), and Nate Diaz (lightweight and occasional welterweight). Paul, meanwhile, struggled to make 200lbs on Friday, forced to weigh in twice.
