One half of the formidable Bonfim brothers, Gabriel Bonfim faced off with Ange Loosa in a welterweight scrap on the main card portion of Saturday’s UFC Denver, at the Ball Arena in Denver, CO.
Bonfim was coming off the first loss of his professional career, against Nicolas Dalby late last year. Loosa, winner of two straight, was 2-1 in the UFC overall.
Bonfim is a tough test especially when it comes to the first round but Loosa would have something to say about that. “The Last Ninja” was able to keep it very competitive on the feet in the first round landing fifteen significant strikes to Bonfim’s twenty-three. Loosa was able to have success with his own offensive grappling with the help of Bonfim trying to sink in the guillotine multiple times.
Bonfim seemed to have made the adjustments in his corner because the second round came and his timing came with him. After a close first round Bonfim started to separate himself in the fight landing thirty five significant strikes opposed to Loosa’s twenty one. The offensive flow of Bonfim seemed to have stopped the offesnive wrestling of Loosa. Bonfim used great use of the clinch landing nasty knees to the body and using his combinations to secure the second round.
Onto the third round in this highly anticipated welterweight fight Bonfim left off right where he started in the second round. The clinch work, knees and jab was to much for Loosa. Loosa tried to go back to his wrestling where he had success in round one but Bonfim was defensively sound. Bonfim finished the third round strong earning him a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 unanimous decision win over a tough Ange Loosa.
Win or lose, the bout was the first time Gabriel Bonfim had seen the scorecards in his professional MMA career.
This was a great fight for both fighters and now we will have to see what is next for both fighters. Loosa is now 2-2 in the UFC after this loss but has a lot of room for growth and improvement. Bonfim is now 3-1 in the UFC and putting himself in a great spot with this win.
Official Result: Gabriel Bonfim def. Ange Loose by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
