LFA 188 went down Friday night at the Gila River Resorts & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Arizona, and the main event, as they say, hit a snag.

Were there a 10 Commandments for MMA, the first would probably read something like this: “Thou shalt make weight for thy fight.” The second, almost certainly, would add, “Thou shalt definitely make weight for a title fight.”

Unfortunately for John Sweeney, he broke those commandments on Thursday, taking himself out of the running for the LFA bantamweight championship in the process. Sweeney weighed in north of 141lbs for the 135lb affair, a massive miscalculation that saw him stripped of the promotion’s bantamweight crown. That left only Rafael Do Nascimento eligible to win the title; should Sweeney had exited Arizona victorious, the belt would remain vacant.

South Carolina’s Sweeney had won the title in his last outing, a decision win against Allan Begosso.
