UFC 303, the promotion’s annual summer centerpiece, is not the card originally advertised.
Rather, in a rare twist, it might actually be better.
Initially expected to house the return of Conor McGregor, opposite Michael Chandler, the UFC put all of its eggs in one basket when it came to its International Fight Week show. Then, when Conor went down due to injury ahead of the fight, for the first time in his career (a broken toe to blame), the company was left with… nothing. Nada. Zilch. A co-main event of Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. was never going to headline, and the hits kept on coming, with first Hill, then Rountree, falling out of the fight, along with replacement Carlos Ulberg.
The UFC needed to pull a rabbit out of Dana White’s hat to salvage UFC 303, and managed to do just that, landing Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka 2, and hastily assembling Brian Ortega vs. Diego Lopes as a co-main event. Along with Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael “Venom” Page, the card was suddenly about more than the return of one man.
Weigh-ins for the new and improved UFC 303 card took place Friday in Las Vegas, with Cageside Press on hand. Results can be found below.
The biggest news coming out of the UFC 303 weigh-in was the card’s co-main event shifting from featherweight to lightweight. That news was announced at the start of Friday morning’s weigh-in window. While Diego Lopes weighed in early, Brian “T-City” Ortega hit the scales much later in the two-hour weigh-in session. Both made weight, but Jean Silva did not, missing by 1.5lbs for his featherweight fight with Charles Jourdain.
Silva was the only miss of the morning. Anthony Smith weighed in last, hitting 206lbs after stripping down.
