Welterweight Josh Quinlan boasts a 100% finish rate among his wins, but the UFC Vegas 93 star is looking to take a different approach ahead of his fight with Adam Fugitt.
“I do plan on being a little more free, a little less rigid in my approach. The past fights, I’ve been a little one dimensional,” Quinlan (6-2) explained during this week’s media day. “I’m looking to just be able to mix it up, be a little more free in the way to adjust to the situation. Study my opponent, not just go in looking to punch the guy in the face, but set up some things, be a little more measured.”
Quinlan, who has lost two straight since claiming a victory over Jason Witt in his promotional debut, believes that with his strengths and some patience, he’s capable of getting back to the win column.
He also plans on looking better come Saturday. “Each fight, I plan on getting better. I feel I’m getting better, learning myself. I’m still early in my career, looking to make it a long one, and looking forward to this bout.”
That development is something Quinlan is targeting inside and outside of the cage. “The growth I’m talking about is maturity as a person, maturity as a fighter,” he stated. “I believe in fights you learn something. You learn more from your losses than your wins. I believe it’s turning me into the man and the fighter I am today. I just seek the growth out, I’m not focused on the result of the fight, but of course I’m looking for that victory, looking for that W. But if it doesn’t go my way, I’m going to reflect on it, grow from it and make the adjustments.”
In Fugitt, Josh Quinlan sees an opponent able to mix it up, but that’s something “Bushido” has been working on as well.
“Adam Fugitt is a great fighter, he brings a lot to the table. He’s well-seasoned, and I’m looking to just have a clash of styles. I’m more heavy in the stand-up, he’s more heavy in the clinch and grappling, but I believe we can both mix it up. He’s good at mixing it up, and I’ve been developing both parts of my game. Looking to showcase my grappling, my clinch that I’ve been working on. And just be ready for any situation that arises.”
